5 New Series Premiering This Week on Netflix, Hulu, and Max

From a classic character brought to life, to an intoxicated special ops team trying to save the world, there's even stand up comedy on this list.

Faraway Downs

Premiered on Hulu 26 November

This six-episode miniseries starring Nicole Kidman and Hugh Jackman serves as an extended version of Baz Luhrmann 's 2008 film Australia, but with an alternate ending and previously unseen footage from the original film.

With World War II looming, an English aristocrat travels to Australia to force her husband to sell their failing cattle ranch, but changes her mind after he is murdered. This is just the beginning of what the movie describes as an epic outback adventure with an unexpected and heartwarming ending, but critics weren't convinced.

Scoring only 46% on Rotten Tomatoes, and described by others as 'clumsy, confused and borderline exploitative,' Faraway Downs can only hope that things improve as time goes on and viewers tune in.

Verified Stand-Up

Premiered on Netflix 28 November

If you're a lover of stand-up comedy or on the hunt for your next favorite comedian, then this one's for you.

Described by Netflix as 'Ten comics. Ten dynamic sets. Two episodes,' Verified Stand-Up features a diverse lineup of talent, with some of the most promising up-and-coming names in stand-up comedy not just performing, but competing against each other in front of a live audience.

You'll definitely want to sit down and enjoy as the likes of Asif Ali, Dulce Sloan, Vanessa Gonzalez and more take the stage to wow you with one-liners, hilarious stories and a fair share of raunchy jokes.

The Artful Dodger

Coming to Hulu 28 November

Bring to life a character from Charles Dickens' legendary Oliver Twist. Set in Australia in the 1850s, The Artful Dodger follows a now-adult Jack Dawkins after he trades in his life as a pickpocket to use his nimble fingers and brilliant mind in the world of surgery, but it doesn't take long for his past to catch up with him.

With Thomas Brodie-Sangster (The Maze Runner) in the lead role, fans are eagerly awaiting the premiere of this 8-episode Victorian-era series, which promises an epic adventure of redemption and unexpected romance, with many excited that this adaptation does not seem to be as dark and edgy as previous works (we're looking at you, Great Expectations).

Bookie

Coming to Max 30 November

After global phenomena like Two and a Half Men and The Big Bang Theory, fans have high expectations for any work from American writer-director Chuck Lorre, and Bookie is certainly no exception.

Starring stand-up comedians Sebastian Maniscalco and Omar J. Dorsey, this 8-episode comedy follows two veteran sports bookies as they struggle to stay afloat amid the impending legalization of sports betting in Los Angeles. The two are also forced to deal with family drama and crazy clients, including Charlie Sheen, who reunites with Lorre for the first time in over a decade since their infamous fallout.

Obliterated

Coming to Netflix 30 November

This high-stakes action teaches us never to celebrate too soon, as an elite Special Forces team is forced to track and take down a deadly terrorist group with a nuclear bomb that is threatening to blow up Las Vegas for a second time after a drunken, drug and sex-fueled celebration thinking they had already taken them down.

Their mission through Sin City is pure mayhem (think The Hangover, but much more violent), with thrilling action sequences and hilarious mishaps that you won't want to miss a minute of. Will they really save the world this time? While heavily under the influence? We'll find out in late November.
