Some movies get off to a bad start before they even hit theaters, causing backlash for a variety of reasons.

In some cases, a movie can get a tremendous amount of backlash long before it is released for all sorts of reasons, some of which are understandable and some of which are questionable at best.

So here are 5 movies that were hated before they were even released.

Gladiator 2 (2024)

Let's start with one of the most recent cases, as the sequel to Ridley Scott 's iconic film is scheduled for November 22, 2024. While it is hard to say whether the movie will end up a horrible mess, some of the fans' outrage is absolutely justified.

They understandably say that it is an absolutely unnecessary sequel, as the original starring Russell Crowe ended on a perfect bitter-sweet not. And considering how Ridley Scott has bastardized the legacy of his other iconic film, Alien, with the release of Prometheus and Alien: Covenant, we can't really blame them.

Captain Marvel (2019)

What should have been just another installment in the MCU turned into a parade of hate due to some of Brie Larson's comments that enraged some fans. The movie wasn't nearly as bad as they made it out to be, as it was expected to be just another decent, if not groundbreaking, Marvel movie.

The Dark Knight (2008)

When it was announced that Heath Ledger would be playing the Joker in Christopher Nolan 's second Batman film, fans were up in arms because they didn't see the handsome actor as the mad clown, and crudely photoshopped makeup on Ledger's photos to prove their point.

In an unexpected turn of events, everyone was blown away by his performance once the movie was released, making him one of the best iterations of the Joker to date.

The Little Mermaid (2023)

Fans were getting extremely tired of live-action remakes of Disney classics, so when the first trailers and posters for The Little Mermaid were released, they nitpicked almost everything (and to be fair, sometimes they were right). When the movie came out, it wasn't outright terrible, as some fans predicted, but just an okay movie, even if it was inferior to the original.

Ghostbusters ( 2016)

Almost everyone expected this movie to fail, and this time the fans were right. The reboot ended up being a bland and unfunny mess that everyone quickly forgot about.
