5 Movies Reddit Hated Because of Only One Character
We wish we’d erase these characters from their films and from our memory.
Sometimes even a side character can ruin the viewer’s whole impression of the movie, and the more they are on screen, the less you want to continue watching it.
Here are five characters which Redditors accused of spoiling their films to the bitter end.
1. Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016) - Lex Luthor, played by Jesse Eisenberg
Eisenberg’s embodiment of this annoying character, an eccentric businessman, who is extremely obsessed with defeating Superman, is considered quite an unfair casting decision (and we’re not talking about Ben Affleck in the role of Batman), which made the whole movie tough to watch.
“Just absolute cringe in every single scene,” Redditor @Born-Implement-9956 issues a verdict for the actor’s Luthor in a recent discussion.
2. The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug (2013) - Alfrid Lickspittle, played by Ryan Gage
You might have forgotten this character, however, he is still there, to Tolkien fans’ disappointment. Despite the fact that Alfrid wasn’t present in the books, which already makes him quite a controversial hero, the Master of Laketown's arrogant servant came out as such an disturbing character that LOTR fandom agrees in the thought that “every scene he was in was a complete joke and unnecessary,” as voiced by @TyMaster117.
3. Gangs of New York (2002) - Jenny Everdeane, played by Cameron Diaz
According to Redditors’ opinion, Diaz’s heroine was added to the movie only to attract the female audience to watch a romantic story in the decorations of the historical drama.
Apart from some claims regarding the actress’ controversial acting in this particular movie, it is considered that Jenny is completely irrelevant in the story of the Irish immigrants’ protest against the threat of conscription during the Civil War.
4. House of Gucci (2021) - Paolo Gucci, played by Jared Leto
Leto’s portrayal of the grandson of Gucci's founder sparked lots of fiery discussions, in which users expressed their total resentment to his character.
“His accent is distractingly ridiculous <...>, his physicality is cartoonishly goofy, and he somehow manages to make his character the comic relief in a movie with no comedy,” fairly concludes Redditor @WorkIsDumbSoAmI.
5. The Godfather Part III (1990) - Mary Corleone, played by Sofia Coppola
This role was eventually handed to the director Francis Ford Coppola’s own daughter after a series of unexpected casting troubles. As a result, she wasn’t prepared for portraying the daughter of the mafia lord, Michael Corleone, which came along with the poorly written line of this character and was eventually reflected in its severe criticism.
