These alien creatures look much more, well, alien, compared to countless other extraterrestrial organisms shown in movies.

All too often, aliens in movies are shown as humanoid creatures, such as two of the most famous, the Predators and Xenomorphs from the Predator and Alien franchises. But there's so much room to explore, and these five movies do just that, showcasing unique and stunning alien species that don't even remotely resemble humans. Beware of potential spoilers.

Arrival (2016)

The heptapods in this Denis Villeneuve masterpiece stand out for a variety of reasons, from being completely peaceful (unlike many other aliens in movies) to being different from humans in every way possible. The creators certainly put a lot of work into making these cephalopod-like creatures with their unique language (understanding which is the main plot point of the movie), distinctive spaceships, and different perception of time itself.

Edge of Tomorrow ( 2014)

Speaking of time-bending aliens, this 2014 sci-fi action starring Tom Cruise delivered just that, as the Mimics were able to nearly destroy humanity with their ability to affect time in their favor. And they also looked pretty fresh (at least almost a decade ago), being an amalgamation of what looks like tentacles covering their entire bodies.

Solaris (2002)

This sci-fi drama, based on the novel of the same name by Stanislaw Lem, may not have been the greatest movie ever made, but it definitely delivered perhaps the most unique alien organism on our list (though that is the achievement of the source material). Humanoids, cephalopods, but how about a sentient ocean capable of creating material projections of humans? A truly bizarre concept, although you might want to check out the original novel after watching the adaptation.

The Thing (1982)

The unnamed alien creature of the title is also able to replicate humans, albeit in a more violent way, by absorbing the original. Based on the novel Who Goes There?, this horror classic definitely outshines the original, thanks in part to great practical effects that show the alien in all its fleshy glory.

Life (2017)

The creature named Calvin from this 2017 sci-fi horror is a clear example of why you don't poke an alien organism with a stick. While the film received mixed reviews, the creature looked quite unique and fresh, resembling some kind of amoeba or other single-celled organism, only grown to enormous proportions.
