5 Most Underrated Psychological Thrillers from 2010s, Picked by Reddit
Miss quality suspense? These five projects have some.
Surely you have seen Shutter Island or Gone Girl – these are classic thrillers that have been recognized by both viewers and critics. However, the genre is full of projects that have gone unnoticed – and undeservedly so, as there are real gems among them that are better than many big-budget films.
1. Coherence, 2013
James Ward Byrkit's Coherence is one of those movies made on a dime that can outshine big commercial blockbusters. There are no spectacular special effects, but Coherence has something better: a really unusual and, most importantly, scientifically accurate idea about traveling to parallel realities.
The plot revolves around a group of friends who are affected by Miller's comet, which unexpectedly approaches Earth. Byrkit, who is best known for his theatrical work, decided not to shoot the film according to script, but instead allowed his actors to improvise – most of Coherence is based on dialogues that were literally born in the moment. This only made the movie more realistic and, oddly enough, scarier.
2. Take Shelter, 2011
Usually tornadoes are the companions of blockbusters and disaster movies, but Take Shelter is a completely different matter. This movie was made in the genre of drama and thriller.
The main character of the movie sees apocalyptic tornadoes in his dreams, which he first tries to ignore, but then perceives as a prophecy. The movie makes the viewer wonder who is more insane in the movie – the one who wakes up in horror from the visions and spends the family's money to build a giant shelter from terrible tornadoes, or the people around him who accept the prophecies with ridicule.
3. The Invitation, 2015
Will arrives with his girlfriend at the house of his ex-wife Eden and her new husband. Will and Eden separated after the death of their son and have not spoken since – and the man does not understand why he is suddenly invited to dinner. Soon more people gather at the house, claiming to have joined a strange cult called The Invitation. Will understands that this meeting is unlikely to end well.
Like Will, we immediately understand that something is wrong in this situation, and every second we wait for a catch. And yet, towards the end, the movie manages to turn all expectations upside down – telling the story of a large-scale conspiracy without leaving the four walls of a house.
4. Creep, 2014
Freelance videographer Aaron responds to an unusual job offer – a dying man, Josef, asks him to help him record a message to his unborn son. Almost immediately, the client starts behaving strangely, either starting a creepy conversation or suddenly appearing in the room in the middle of the night wearing a wolf mask.
Creep surprises not so much with a wild twist, but with the way the movie unfolds. This mockumentary thriller has a place for comedy and even a strange melodrama. Creep is first and foremost a movie with a lot of dialog that manages to captivate with its improvised conversations in a way that not every action-packed thriller can.
5. Trance, 2013
Returning to normal life after an injury that causes memory loss is not a quick process. Memories may return in a few days, or it may take years to recover a tiny part of the past.
The main character of Trance committed a crime – he stole a painting worth tens of millions of pounds from a museum, but during the theft was hit on the head and completely forgot the details of the crime.
The accomplices are unhappy – the theft was successful, but they never received the stolen canvas. To restore the details of the event, they hire a hypnotist to put the man into a trance and make him remember where the painting is hidden.
