Sometimes the writers get too creative for no reason.

Many TV shows are considered to be at their best when they have those unexpected plot twists that leave you gasping with your eyes wide open. And it's understandable why showrunners want to throw in as many of them as possible: it draws in the audience.

But sometimes those twists are so absurd and pointless that it takes courage for fans not to give up on the show immediately. Here are the best examples.

1. Spencer’s Evil Twin — Pretty Little Liars

Pretty Little Liars was excellent at giving fans the most complicated storylines, though not every one of them actually paid off. Take the one with Spencer's evil British twin, for example. Even though the soapy side of the show could handle such a twist, it was unnecessary to the overall plot and not well received by the audience.

2. Ted And Robin Ending Up Together — How I Met Your Mother

The finale of the show is probably the most hated because of this twist that happened at the end. The premise of the show was to find out who the mother of Ted's children was, but instead we ended up witnessing a slow burn relationship between two people who have proven time and time again that they are bad for each other.

3. Luke’s 12-Year-Old Daughter — Gilmore Girls

We love Gilmore Girls for many reasons, but this twist is definitely not one of them. After a long will-they-won't-they journey, Lorelai and Luke finally managed to get into a real relationship in season 6 of the show. But it seems like it was only to make them go through one more obstacle.

Suddenly, Luke finds out he has a 12-year-old daughter he never knew about when April shows up to do her own paternity test as a science project. Though some fans had nothing against the girl, having this development so late in the series did not go over well.

4. Evil Castiel — Supernatural

Castiel has arguably been the third most important character in the show since season 4, and his storylines have always intrigued fans. But this particular one has been poorly received for many reasons.

Castiel turning evil is one of the most unpopular twists in the series. The reason why the writers needed that twist is still unclear, because after some time they have decided that he needs to go crazy enough to think he is a God, only to lose his memory in season 7 and come back to senses.

5. The Explosion Not Killing Hopper — Stranger Things

Fans of fantasy shows should have gotten used to the characters being able to survive in various life-threatening situations, but sometimes it just goes too far. At the end of Stranger Things season 3, we were led to believe that Hopper died in a massive explosion. However, the beginning of the next season brings him back alive, albeit stuck in a Russian gulag, which only makes the "death" pointless.
