5 Grey’s Anatomy Actors Who Also Directed Most of Its Episodes
There are no boundaries for real talent.
When the show has been on the air for nearly two decades, it's important for the team behind it to give the actors more freedom so no one gets bored and quits in the middle of the run.
Although Grey's Anatomy is known for having a cast that stays together for years, Shondaland still gives the actors a chance to try different roles on set.
Throughout the show's run, a good portion of the regular cast has stepped up to direct one or more episodes of the show. With some more successful than others, here are 5 Grey's Anatomy cast members who have directed the most episodes of the show.
Kevin McKidd - 39 episodes
Although Owen Hunt is far from a fan-favorite character, Kevin McKidd has established himself not only as a great actor, but also as a prominent director of Grey's Anatomy episodes. Some of his most memorable episodes are True Colors (S13E23) and Blowin' in the Wind (S15E8).
Debbie Allen - 36 episodes
Once again, Catherine Fox's controversial character cannot diminish Debbie Allen's contribution to Grey's Anatomy as a director.
Allen has worked on more than 30 episodes of the drama, including Somebody That I Used to Know (S10E10) and Family Affair (S12E24). In addition to Grey's, she has directed on more than 50 other productions.
Chandra Wilson - 24 episodes
From season 6 to season 19, Chandra Wilson has blessed Grey's Anatomy fans with not only a great portrayal of Dr. Miranda Bailey, but also beautifully directed, heartfelt episodes like My Next Life (S12E12) and Everyday Angel (S15E5). Let's hope there are more to come in season 20!
Jesse Williams - 4 episodes
Judging by the episodes Fight For Your Mind (S14E22) and What I Did For Love (S15E23), Williams' talents don't end with acting.
Considering how he's been back behind the camera even after his acting run was over, there's potential to see more episodes from him in future seasons.
Ellen Pompeo - 2 episodes
It's not surprising that Ellen Pompeo, a person who has been at the side of Grey's Anatomy for almost 20 years, would dip her toes into directing.
The two episodes Pompeo was responsible for were Be Still, My Soul (S13E18) and Old Scars, Future Hearts (S14E15), both of which have some very heartfelt moments and important conversations.
