The reason for Scrappy being the villain could not have been more random.

When it comes to iconic franchises, few hold a place in our hearts quite like Scooby-Doo.

In 2002, Scooby-Doo made a leap from the small screen to the big screen, bringing our favorite mystery-solving team to life in a live-action adventure that divided opinions.

While the 2002 Scooby-Doo movie may have received mixed reviews upon its release, it is still a part of Scooby-Doo's history. And we've got some cool facts about the movie that we're dying to share with you.

James Gunn wrote the screenplay

Before becoming one of the best MCU 's directors and subsequently DC's big boss, it seems like James Gunn didn't have much on his plate.

However, he wrote the script for Scooby-Doo, and his initial version was actually R-rated, but they ended up tweaking it later on to make it more suitable for families.

The movie has no soul in it (literally)

The director had to make one big change in response to some serious backlash from religious audiences during the test screening.

Originally, they were calling the stuff extracted from people's bodies "souls" because of the whole soul-sucker machine thing.

But they had to replace it with "protoplasm" instead. That way, they hoped to address the concerns and keep everyone happy.

Pamela Anderson's cameo

You could easily forget it, but there is actually Pamela Anderson's cameo at the start of the movie. It's a shout-out to all those random famous people who used to pop up on the animated series.

The director said they were racking their brains trying to find the most random star for a cameo, and that's how they made their choice.

Fred and Daphne are a real-life couple

Freddie Prinze Jr. (aka Fred) and Sarah Michelle Gellar (aka Daphne) were totally up for playing in the movie. And guess what?

They're actually a couple in real life. The director thought it was an awesome idea too, so they got the green light and both of them were approved for the roles.

Why is Scrappy the villain?

Raja Gosnell expressed that one of the big controversies was making Scrappy the bad guy in the film. Even though he is a fan of the original series, when Scrappy showed up, it seemed to Gosnell that Scrappy was ruining the show.

So when James Gunn and Raja Gosnell were brainstorming, trying to come up with this epic twist, that's when they thought about Scrappy as the antagonist.
