5 Biggest New Fantasy and Sci-Fi Shows to Make 2024 a Year You Won't Forget
Whatever comes to haunt us next year, we’ll have a handful of fictional universes to escape from reality into. 2024 looks great when it comes to fantasy and sci-fi shows!
5. Avatar: The Last Airbender
Even if you’ve lived under a rock since the start of this millennium, you should know this iconic Nickelodeon series: after all, some earthbender would have uncovered you from under there. The original animated show conquered hearts and minds around the world with its charming characters, funny interactions, and epic story.
Now, years after M. Night Shyamalan ’s failure, Netflix attempts another live-action reboot of The Last Airbender, and we don’t know what to expect: adapting such a beloved animated series can go both ways. Still, we sincerely hope Netflix does the original Avatar justice and creates a great TV show for the new generation of fans.
The show is scheduled for release on February 22, 2024 on Netflix.
4. The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live
The TWD franchise has surely come a long way since its humble beginnings and now boasts a handful of spin-offs and even sequels. The Ones Who Live will add to the latter category with a welcome twist: the long-anticipated return of Rick and Michonne Grimes, the protagonists who left the original show before its finale.
While many people suggest The Walking Dead has already overstayed its welcome, the franchise’s fanbase certainly doesn’t think so. Fans are excited to see the iconic characters return and unveil the mystery behind Rick Grimes’s bridge accident. Admittedly, The Ones Who Live will be his last outing as it only has eight episodes.
The show is scheduled for release on February 25, 2024 on AMC.
3. Fallout
One of the most popular video game franchises in the world, Fallout finally gets its own TV show following the success of other recent game adaptations. In Fallout, nuclear war is not just a reality; it’s a distant past that led the planet to become inhospitable, animals to mutate in unpredictable ways, and humans to grow unhinged and brutal.
What sets Fallout apart from other post-nuclear war settings is its unique atmosphere: what’s left of the USA is stuck in an eternal and twisted version of the 1950s. It may look weird at first with supermutants, patriots in power armor, and barely-holding-together settlements built atop nuked towns, but it somehow works.
The show is scheduled for release on April 12, 2024 on Prime Video.
2. Star Wars: The Acolyte
Against all odds, Disney ’s Star Wars keeps going strong — if not with movies, then with TV shows. The Mandalorian was a huge success, and in 2024, there will be a plethora of new Star Wars content. We find The Acolyte the most intriguing of the new shows thanks to its unique setting: the series will show the era we dreamt of.
Set in the Golden Age of the Jedi, Star Wars: The Acolyte will take us further back in time than any installment of the franchise ever has. Your guesses are as good as ours, but we bet the series will feature the fall of the Jedi Empire from the new Sith perspective. If that doesn’t sound like fun, we don’t know what does! And it’s Dark.
The show is scheduled for release in summer 2024 on Disney Plus.
1. The Penguin
Batman ’s story has had one too many iterations throughout the last few decades, but people still love it. The immense success of Robert Pattinson ’s latest take on the Caped Crusader only highlighted it, and now The Batman is set to grow into its own franchise that’s separate from James Gunn ’s DCU and the Joker movies.
One of Batman’s primary antagonists, the Penguin, was also brought back to life by none other than Colin Farrell, and it’s only right we get to learn his side of the story, too. The Penguin will follow the titular villain’s rise to power in Gotham and become the first in the series of TV shows to revolve around Batman’s antagonists.
The show is scheduled for release in 2024 on Max.
