5 Best War Romance Movies If You Liked We Were the Lucky Ones
From a nine-Oscar-winning drama to an acclaimed French classic.
Each year, World War II stories continue to fill streaming libraries. Just last year, two prominent series in the genre were released: A Small Light, the story of a Dutch woman who helped Anne Frank's family, and Transatlantic, an uplifting tale of activists who evacuated refugees from occupied France. We Were the Lucky Ones stands alongside these projects – it's a heartbreaking story of ordinary people in war.
If you don't have time for TV shows, these five movies about love in wartime are just what you need.
1. Allied, 2016
In 1942, Max, an intelligence officer, arrives in Casablanca to assassinate the German ambassador. Marianne, a member of the French Resistance, becomes his accomplice. Working together, the two fall in love and decide to settle in London. A happy family life, a child, a cozy home – all this can collapse in an instant because of Marianne's secrets.
Allied is an espionage thriller by Robert Zemeckis, director of Forrest Gump and Back to the Future. The director places the characters in war conditions and offers a unique love story in the spirit of Mr. & Mrs. Smith. Brad Pitt played the male lead in both films.
2. Testament of Youth, 2014
The world is on the brink of World War I. Vera dreams of a career as a writer, but girls like her are not supposed to think about education. Nevertheless, she manages to persuade her parents to allow her to go to Oxford. At the same time, Vera meets Roland. But their plans for a future together are thwarted by the outbreak of war. Roland and his friends go to the front, and Vera decides to serve her country as a nurse.
The war in James Kent's movie is seen through the eyes of a young Englishwoman – a promising, talented student, Vera, who will witness the horrors of war and lose loved ones. The drama is based on Vera Brittain's biographical novel of the same name, published in 1933.
3. Suite Française, 2014
France during World War II. The Nazis occupy the country, and the French are forced to build a life side by side with members of the Third Reich. Lucile lives with her mother-in-law, and her husband, whom she doesn't love, has gone to the front.
A German officer moves into the women's house, and suddenly feelings flare up between Lucile and the stranger. She loves to play the piano and he is a former composer. Attempts to isolate herself from the new neighbor fail: Lucile ends up falling in love with the enemy of her people.
Typically, war movies revolve around a couple who are forced to separate because of the dark times. Suite Française, on the other hand, shows how relationships develop against the backdrop of war. Director Saul Dibb tries to figure out the ethics of having an affair with a man fighting on the other side.
4. The English Patient, 1996
It's the end of World War II, and Sister Hana is grieving the loss of loved ones in Italy. One day, a burned pilot is brought from Africa to Europe with very little time to live. Hana becomes a nurse to an English patient in an abandoned monastery. Day by day, the man begins to remember the past – research in the desert and a heartbreaking love story.
The movie is based on the Booker Prize-winning novel by Michael Ondaatje. The movie, like the source material, received well-deserved accolades: nine Oscar statuettes, including one in the Best Picture category.
5. The Reader, 2008
Fifteen-year-old Michael begins an affair with Hanna, who is twice his age. The characters spend time in the woman's apartment: the young man reads books to her, and she listens to his stories.
After some time, the man discovers that Hanna has disappeared. Another eight years pass, Michael is now a law student and attends the trial of the Nazis. It is in the courtroom that the student notices his former lover: it turns out that Hanna worked as a guard in Auschwitz.
The Reader is not your typical story of forbidden love with a big age gap. Stephen Daldry's film is primarily an exploration of the aftermath of the Holocaust and the nature of evil.
