5 Actors Who Lost The Audition Battle For The Role Of Their Dreams
Sometimes being turned down for a role can be for the best, but that doesn't mean that your dream won't come crashing down at that very moment.
Auditions are undoubtedly the hardest part of any actor's journey. They can be fiercely competitive, with talented actors vying for coveted roles that could potentially launch their careers or define their legacies.
While some actors end up fulfilling their dreams by landing iconic roles, others experience the disappointment of losing out on opportunities they desperately wanted. Here are 5 actors who lost out when it came to auditioning for the roles that could have changed their lives.
1. Matthew McConaughey as Jack Dawson
On a 2019 episode of Watch What Happens Live With Andy Cohen, Oscar-winning actor Matthew McConaughey revealed that he auditioned for the iconic Titanic lead. McConaughey described the audition as going very well and even expressed confidence in his performance, saying he had a feeling he had it in the bag.
However, with the role eventually going to Leonardo DiCaprio, his gut feeling turned him down, just like the casting directors did.
2. John Krasinksi as Captain America
During an appearance on The Ellen Degeneres Show, John revealed that he had auditioned for the role of Captain America long before it was offered to Chris Evans. While trying on the iconic suit, John had a moment of hesitation when Chris Hemsworth walked by and complimented him.
As much as he wanted to play Captain America, it ended up being offered to Chris Evans.
3. Jennifer Lawrence as Bella Swan
The Hunger Games star initially auditioned for the iconic role of teenager Bella Swan in the vampire Twilight Saga, but the part eventually went to Kristin Stewart. Lawrence admitted that she didn't fully understand the nature of the audition and was taken aback when she saw the film succeed after it came out.
4. Britney Spears as Allie Hamilton
The Notebook 's casting director, Matthew Barry, revealed that Britney Spears and Rachel McAdams were two strong contenders for the role of Allie Hamilton. He revealed that Britney had dedicated herself to preparing for the role and spent a lot of time working with him.
However, despite her impressive performance, the role eventually went to Rachel McAdams and it was a close call between the two actresses.
5. Miles Teller as Sebastian Wilder
Miles Teller had previously worked with La La Land director Damien Chazelle on the film Whiplash, which led to discussions about working together on the director's next project. Teller was cast in the lead role of Sebastian, but for reasons unknown, the actor was eventually replaced in the role by Ryan Gosling.
The actor was deeply affected by this, as he confirmed that, despite other opportunities that arose during the film's development and the film's potential setback, Teller chose to remain loyal to Chazelle and the film.
