4 Sci-Fi And Fantasy Books That Are About to Get Adapted, And You Didn’t Know
This list looks so impressive that it is literally impossible to wait.
Science fiction and fantasy adaptations are back in vogue. Who among the fans of the genre has not dreamed of seeing their favorite characters and plots finally brought to the screen in a canon-compliant manner?
Today's list is just for those fans!
1. The Changeling by Victor LaValle
A young father searches for his wife and child in New York City, a city populated not only by humans but also by creatures from myth and legend. LaValle mixes genres from detective fiction to mythological fantasy, constantly shifting between the problems of the modern world and the dangers of the supernatural one.
The first three of eight episodes were released on Apple TV+ on September 8 and will continue to be released once a week. From the very beginning, the show is filled with ominous hints, suspense, and dark magic.
2. Anansi Boys by Neil Gaiman
Anansi Boys is set in the American Gods universe. It's worth reading to immerse yourself in the atmosphere of a magical urban fantasy with charismatic characters and a thoughtful setting.
Amazon Prime has ordered a six-episode miniseries in 2021. Gaiman became one of the screenwriters and executive producers, which gives hope for a proper adaptation.
In 2022, Gaiman announced the completion of filming and the start of post-production. Since then, there has been no significant news about the series – let’s hope it will be released at least in 2024.
3. The Electric State by Simon Stalenhag
The Swedish artist's graphic novel is not well known to the general reader, but it is an interesting variation on the topic of a post-apocalyptic alternate past.
The Electric State was filmed by the Russo Brothers and also has an impressive number of stars: among the actors are Millie Bobby Brown, Chris Pratt, Brian Cox and Stanley Tucci. Filming wrapped in early 2023 and the movie is scheduled for release on Netflix in 2024.
4. Mickey 7 by Edward Ashton
Mickey 7 by Edward Ashton is a psychological fantasy about human survival in a confined space. The main character, Mickey 7, is not a person, but a self-reproducing clone who works on a cold and dangerous planet where access to other humans is denied.
But one day an error occurs, and a new clone, Mickey 8, appears not after the death of the previous iteration, but exists in parallel with Mickey 7.
The director and screenwriter of Mickey 17 (the number was changed from 7 to 17) is Bong Joon-ho, who won four Oscars in 2020 for the movie Parasite. The cast is also stellar – Mickey is played by Robert Pattinson, with Toni Collette and Mark Ruffalo in other roles. In 2022, it was announced that Mickey 17 will be released on the big screen on March 29, 2024.
