4 Easter Eggs Nodding to Quentin Tarantino in Marvel Movies and TV Shows
What do Pulp Fiction and Captain America have in common?
Nick Fury's Gravestone
Nick Fury's gravestone in Captain America: The Winter Soldier is the most obvious nod to Quentin Tarantino. On the gravestone, you can spot a line from the bible verse that Sam Jackson's character Jules recites in Pulp Fiction, "The path of the righteous man…" from Ezekiel 25:17.
Tarantino actually spoke about this reference in an interview with BBC Radio 1. And the iconic director loved it! Growing up as a Marvel comic book fan, he was thrilled to see a nod to his work in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, even though he also criticized Marvel films.
Cup of Soda
Another reference was found in Captain Marvel. A Skrull Talos, played by Ben Mendelsohn, is seen sipping on soda from a red and white striped cup. It was a nod to Mr. Blonde from Reservoir Dogs, portrayed by Michael Madsen, who is sipping from a similar cup in the movie.
Actor from Pulp Fiction
Luke Cage, a TV series that aired for 2 seasons on Netflix, had a couple Easter Eggs and references to Tarantino. If you think it's just a coincidence, here's a fun fact: Tarantino once considered making a Luke Cage film before he set his sights on Pulp Fiction.
In episode 3 of Luke Cage, Misty Knight says the line, "Damn it, you broke my concentration" to Detective Rafael Scarfe, portrayed by Frank Whaley.
Now, if you're a Tarantino enthusiast, this is probably giving you déjà vu. Because Frank Whaley also played in Pulp Fiction. It's an almost mirrored scene where Samuel L. Jackson 's character interrupts and shoots someone, then coolly says to Whaley's character, "Oh, I'm sorry, did I break your concentration?"
Direct Mention of Quentin Tarantino
But that's not all for Luke Cage. After a wild shootout at Pop's place, Cottonmouth’s henchman, responsible for the massacre, cheekily compares the aftermath to Candyland from Django Unchained, even suggesting someone should give Tarantino a call.
So, Does Quentin Tarantino Exist in the Marvel Cinematic Universe?
The last reference implies that Quentin Tarantino exists in the universe of Luke Cage and other Marvel shows on Netflix. However, there’s a catch: Netflix TV shows are now most likely not part of the MCU canon. Even though some actors like Charlie Cox came back, most of them didn't.
Moreover, in the same Luke Cage series, Mahershala Ali portrayed Cottonmouth, the show’s antagonist, while now, he is set to join the MCU as Blade, which is another indication that Netflix shows are likely not canon to the Cinematic Universe.
