There are many mysteries lurking in John Ronald Reuel Tolkien's universe. Whether it's endless elven forests filled with spiders, deep caves with goblins and trolls, or abandoned castles where great evil resides.

The fans decided to choose the most terrifying monsters that appeared on screen in the two great trilogies directed by Peter Jackson.

3. Smaug

Smaug, the fearsome dragon, is one of the most memorable villains in The Hobbit. His immense size, fiery breath and cunning personality make him a formidable adversary for Bilbo Baggins and his companions.

Smaug's presence is felt long before he is seen, as his deep voice echoes through the halls of the Lonely Mountain.

Fans have raved about Smaug's portrayal on screen, citing the dragon's introduction as nearly the best moment in the entire Hobbit trilogy.

2. Shelob

Another creature that continues to give fans nightmares is Shelob, the giant spider. She first appears in The Return of the King and is the spawn of pure evil.

Her enormous body size, venomous bite, and ability to weave a web around her unsuspecting victims make her a truly terrifying foe.

One of the most intense and bone-chilling moments in the trilogy is when Frodo Baggins is caught in Shelob's web and subsequently attacked.

Fans were on the edge of their seats, fearing for the halfling's life as he carried the ring into Mordor when he encountered the spider.

1. Durin's Bane

Durin's Bane, also known as the Balrog, Demon of Shadow and Flame. This ancient creature dwells in the depths of Moria and appears as an unstoppable force against the Fellowship of the Ring.

With its tremendous strength, fiery whip, and ability to control the power of darkness, the Durin's Bane is a formidable foe.

The battle between Gandalf the Grey and the Balrog is one of the most iconic moments in the trilogy, leaving fans in awe of the creature's ferocity and terror.

There are still many dangers in Middle-earth. Fans want to see the fearsome Morgoth, who has taken Sauron under his wing, or the backstory of the Nazgul, once kings of men but now wraiths of the Ring.

Earlier this year, Warner Brothers announced that new films in the Tolkien universe are in the works. Now fans can only hope that the big company doesn't screw it up.
