With great scenes come great backstage struggles.

Summary:

  • The 2002 Spider-Man movie, starring Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst, is still often recalled by fans around the world because of its cultish kiss scene.
  • The Mary Jane actress revealed it was tough to film it due to harsh conditions on set, which had been professionally overcome by the onscreen duo.

Sam Raimi ’s Spider-Man trilogy has become the perfect ground for expanding the MCU franchise and developing further movies about the costumed superhero, starring Andrew Garfield and Tom Holland.

It was highly supported by brilliant performances of Tobey Maguire, who portrayed Peter Parker, the main character having superhuman abilities, and Kirsten Dunst, playing his onscreen love interest, Mary Jane "MJ" Watson.

Despite the fact that the film is filled with superhero’s battles and spectacular flights, the most cultish scene of the whole franchise isn’t related to action at all. The most memorable moment of the trilogy, which prominently inscribed its name in the history, features an extremely romantic kiss between Spider-Man and MJ in the first movie.

In the given scene the fully costumed Peter is dangling upside-down from a web in the rain, while Mary Jane is standing upright kissing him in the lips, released from a mask. It gained a golden movie status and acclaim from both viewers and critics.

The actors received an MTV Movie Award in a Best Kiss category in 2003, with lots of magazines including it in the list of best movie kisses of the 21th century or even of all time.

However, its filming was quite a challenge to both Maguire and Dunst. The actress confessed in a recent interview that “it was kind of miserable actually doing it”.

“It was pouring with rain, freezing, Tobey couldn’t breathe so it was almost like I was resuscitating him,” stated Dunst, lifting the veil of romance from that very scene.

Besides, she revealed that the movie’s director wanted so much to make it special, predicting its potentially iconic status, so that he even gave the MJ actress a book of famous kisses to be inspired by.

In today’s acting industry it can seem kind of funny and surprising to hear but it’s not so obvious whether it did add to the scene’s memorability or not, in spite of that unpleasant shooting experience, described by Dunst.

“This was the 2000s, we thought dangling people upside down and dumping water on their face was okay back then,” sarcastically admits Redditor @Skinamarinked, and we can’t disagree with the fact that today’s filming conditions have developed in a way.

Nevertheless, the Spider-Man kiss will always remain in fans’ hearts, and you can revise the 2002 movie, which is available on Netflix and Prime, to enjoy it one more time.
