A great 2010s neo-Western can ease the agonizing wait for new episodes of Yellowstone.

Summary

  • Yellowstone Season 5B won't be released until November 2024.
  • A great substitute for such a long wait could be another neo-Western show.
  • All six seasons of the series in question are available to stream on Netflix.

Taylor Sheridan 's Yellowstone is probably the most prominent representative of the contemporary Western genre. It demonstrates that, just like 150 years ago, the picturesque plains of the United States are not filled with courageous, romantic lawmen, but with bloody confrontations, crooked politicians, and ranching families who defend their property with the most brutal methods. Sheridan's flagship show is a clever collision of the Old West and the New West, deliberately maintaining no substantive differences between the two.

Last fall, we finally learned when the second half of Yellowstone's fifth season would be released, concluding the story of the Dutton family. Unfortunately, it will not happen until November 2024, so we have a long seven months of agonizing waiting ahead of us.

Of course, some of you may want to pass the time by watching other high-octane Western series. And we have something in store that all Yellowstone fans will definitely enjoy. We highly recommend that you subscribe to Neftlix if you haven't already, as this streaming service has an excellent show that might even replace Yellowstone for you.

What Is This Western Series About?

The neo-Western subgenre is an outstanding example of combining the virtues and vices of the Old and New West, illustrating that human problems and misdeeds are always the same, rooted in selfishness, greed, and envy. And these subjects are explored not only in Yellowstone, but also in the excellent series Longmire, which ran for six seasons from 2012 to 2017, first on A&E and then on Netflix.

Based on the book series by Craig Johnson, the show follows Walt Longmire (Robert Taylor), a well-respected Wyoming sheriff, on a quest to crack down on illegal enterprises, particularly on the Cheyenne Reservation (the series has been particularly lauded for providing a platform for the Cheyenne people, reflecting their experiences and contemporary struggles).

Remarkably, the series features flashbacks of the protagonist in Denver, juxtaposing illegal activities in major cities and beyond. Another important role in the series is that of Lou Diamond Phillips, who portrayed Longmire's old friend, Henry Standing Bear. In addition, the series also stars Katee Sackhoff, Bailey Chase, Cassidy Freeman and Adam Bartley.

What Do Critics and Viewers Say about It?

Longmire is incredibly popular with critics and audiences alike because it is an entertaining story where the title character relies on his cowboy charm, skills, and book knowledge instead of modern technology.

On Rotten Tomatoes, for example, the show received an 88% score from critics and an even higher 92% score from viewers, even though critics tend to rate TV projects much higher. In comparison, Yellowstone received 84% and 76% from critics and audiences, respectively, suggesting that Longmire fared much better with viewers.

Why Is This Show a Good Substitute for Yellowstone?

Although Longmire began as a typical police procedural with an atypical setting in the vein of Justified, it quickly evolved into a full-blown Western drama that is sure to bring to mind Yellowstone.

Like the Duttons, Walt Longmire has to deal with land disputes between wealthy families and representatives of the Cheyenne Reservation, and he gradually becomes involved in the war that permeates all of Wyoming.

In addition, the protagonist may remind you of John Dutton — although the former is a much more positive character with a clear moral compass, both are tough guys that we have seen many times in classic Western movies.

As previously noted, all six seasons of Longmire are available to stream on Netflix.
