How did they manage to end up there in the first place?

Can you believe the first episode of The Simpsons aired in 1989?

The show has a special reputation as a fortune teller, as it has been noted on numerous occasions that actions from many episodes later occurred in real life. But that's not the only thing that makes the show stand out.

Older episodes of the show are different from the new ones, especially when it comes to humor. There are so many offensive jokes that one wonders how The Simpsons got away with them and why they would never fly today. Here are just a few examples.

1. Fuzzy Bunny's Guide to You Know What

There was an episode in season 3 where Bart's class was watching a sex-ed video that Mrs. Krabappel turned on, and it told the story of two young adult rabbits who fall in love, get married, and end up having lots of kids. But there's a sex scene in it, during which Mrs. Krabappel makes the comment, "She's faking it." Well, that's not exactly the sex education the kids deserve…

2. Smithers And The Seamen

The special Halloween episode of season 4 gave us a pun that no adult would have understood, let alone the kids. In the story, Mr. Burns asks Smithers if he thinks inviting Marge on the ship is a good idea, and he replies, "I don't think women and seamen mix." Well, it took us years to understand what he was referring to, but gay jokes are just too risky to use now.

3. Whacking Day

Whacking Day is a holiday celebrated by the people of Springfield on May 10 by whacking snakes to death in the center of town. This is why Homer asked Marge, "Should I whack it slow or fast?" and Marge replied, "Slow, then fast!" While this is obviously a sex reference, it's still not really clear how it ended up in a children's show.

4. 10 Minutes Ride

In season 1 episode 9, we almost witnessed Marge's adultery with Mr. French from the bowling alley, but towards the end of the episode, she came to her senses and realized that she loved Homer. So she went down to the power plant to see him, and happy Homer took her in his arms and went to his car, yelling that he would be back in 10 minutes and definitely making us understand how long their lovemaking would last. Just too much sex in one episode.

5. Loud Time In Bed

Another hyper-sexualized episode in which Marge and Homer enjoyed their time in bed together. There was no specific scene showing the sex, but a post-sex scene appeared when Marge said everything was so amazing and she just hoped the kids didn't hear them. But the next few shots were of Bart and Lisa, wide-eyed in bed, stunned. Then cut to Flanders, also in bed, with a shocked look on his face. Again, kids and sex are not the greatest combination.

6. Not a Funny Joke About Brazil

In season 13, there was a storyline where the family went to Brazil to find Ronaldo. And the portrayal of the country is not quite what we thought it would be. Brazil is shown as a hellhole filled with criminal activity of all kinds. It was so offensive that the Rio de Janeiro Tourism Board almost sued Fox for the way their city was portrayed on screen. Cultural stereotypes - not cool.

7. “Down There” From Bart

In season 24, episode 12, Bart found himself in a relationship with Mary Spuckler, though it was mostly one-sided. He begged the girl to stay with him, claiming that he would be "more attentive" to her needs on the seesaw and that he would "stay down there" as long as she wanted. How many innuendos about sex between children are too much?

8. Stewie And His Sick Humor

Doing episodes with crossover universes with other shows is a popular thing on The Simpsons. For example, in season 13 there was an episode with Stewie who joined Bart for his daily prank call to Moe. But the new guy didn't understand the assignment and said a horrible thing about Moe's sister being raped. Well, the "joke" was poorly received even then, and today something like that would just completely cancel the show.

9. New Orleans Joke

An episode in which Marge was an actress ended up insulting New Orleans. There was a song in the play that said some brutal things about the city, describing it as "home of pirates, drunks and wh*res" and as "stinking, rotten, vomiting, vile". Well, as we said, all cultural stereotypes are bad, but this one wouldn't fly now because of the destruction of Hurricane Katrina.

10. Fox News Gets Called Out

There was an episode in season 22 that focused on Fox's internal problems. The episode featured a Fox News helicopter with a racist sign on it, implying that the network was "#1 with racists". After the episode aired, real Fox anchor Bill O'Reilly was shocked and said it was so ridiculous that Fox would let the show ruin the network's image. Nothing like this could happen on television today.
