10 Perfect Dystopian Shows To Watch While Waiting For Silo And The Handmaid’s Tale New Seasons
You would never find two shows with the same concept in this genre.
A good dystopian show gives you the strong feeling that anything is possible in our world, even if the fictional reality on the screen scares you enough to hope that it will never be the one you live in.
All of the dystopian series about what our future might look like show us different, but mostly frightening, images. So, if you're ready to see something a little extra, check out these ten TV shows that we think will have an impact on you.
1. The 100
The 100 is probably one of the best shows that handles moral dilemmas, however in a totally new reality of a post-apocalyptic world. The thing is, the story of the show focuses on the fact that the Earth is not appropriate for humans living there for almost a century.
However, in an experiment where 100 underage criminals were brought back there for an experiment, we found out that it's actually possible, though too difficult. The experiment is terrifying because any decision they make could cost them their lives.
2. Black Mirror
One of the most popular dystopian TV shows that everyone has probably heard of, even if they haven't watched it. Each episode of Black Mirror tells its own story about how media, technology and AI are changing our everyday lives, and what the consequences could be if things don't go according to plan (is there any plan, by the way?).
While some of the episodes are easy to deal with, the majority still leave you with that horrible aftertaste of "What if something like this happens? What would I do?" And not having an answer scares you to death.
3. The Society
The 2019 Netflix series tells the story of a bunch of small-town teenagers, who accidentally fell into a parallel world. What’s interesting is the fact that there are no adults in this world and the kids themselves should decide how to use the power given to them to survive on a new land.
The series tackles serious issues of overwhelming power and how dangerous it can be. The show's setting gives the best example of human nature struggling in a new reality.
4. Colony
Colony depicts one of the most extravagant cities in the United States, Los Angeles, as one that will be taken over by aliens in the near future. But the story of the show is more than just a simple resistance between human and inhuman forces. While Will Bowman tries to defend his homeland and fight the enemy, his wife betrays him and joins the alien army.
5. Revolution
While many dystopian shows focus on the future worlds being technologically advanced, this one actually tries to make us realize how the world would live without electricity at all. The society is in chaos and doesn't know what to do for quite a long time.
6. Firefly
The series starring Gina Torres premiered in 2002 and quickly became a hit. The sci-fi show revolves around the idea that 500 years from now our living planet, Earth, will be abandoned and the new ones will be favorable to human life.
Firefly follows Captain Malcolm Reynolds, portrayed by the one and only Nathan Fillion, and his ragtag crew aboard their spaceship Serenity. The show is a lot, starting with its plot and ending with the many elements from different genres. This makes the show totally worth watching.
7. Altered Carbon
This Netflix hit premiered in 2018 to give us a take on what the future will look like after some time. In this scenario, we are introduced to a reality in which human consciousness can be transferred to new bodies called "sleeves." A former soldier will try to investigate what this means for society and try to solve a horrible murder.
With its complex storylines, stunning visuals, and exploration of the consequences of immortality, Altered Carbon is a must see dystopian series.
8. The Rain
The Rain’s main problem is the deadly virus that has already killed the majority of Scandinavia's population. There are only two people left who can solve the problem, Simone and Rasmus Anderson. Together, the siblings will find a way to make through the dangers of the post-apocalyptic world and defeat the virus. What’s best about the show is that it holds you in suspense right until the end.
9. Lost in Space
When the attempt to colonize space went wrong... The 2018 series gives us a glimpse of what would happen if you got stuck on an alien planet with your whole family. Together with the Robinsons, the rest of the survivors of the mission will try to find a way home. The series is an exciting thing to watch, as it focuses on a group attempt to deal with a huge problem where there is no one to blame.
10. The Man in the High Castle
The series is loosely based on Philip K. Dick's novel, but focuses on what an alternate ending to World War II would have done to society. Can the Nazi-controlled America be a real place where people would have a chance to live? Well, you can guess the answer. The show is actually one of the most thought-provoking dystopian series created ever.
