10 Infuriatingly Obnoxious Characters Who Poisoned Their Great Shows
If these characters weren’t in their TV shows, we would have probably finished them. Prepare for biblical levels of second-handed frustration before opening this list.
10. Jack Shephard from Lost
Sometimes, in an attempt to give a character some personality flaws, writers outdo themselves and turn an initially likable character into an obnoxious one. Lost’s Jack Shephard is a prime example: while he’s supposed to be a hero, what he really is is a frustratingly entitled manchild who just can’t quit whining for the life of him.
9. Rita Bennett from Dexter
For many people, overly dramatic characters have always been a bane of any show they were in, and we totally get it. Dexter is great, but Rita Bennett’s whiny drama queen attitude was a real killjoy for many fans, and some even claim they were glad when Rita was “finally” killed off and they could keep enjoying the show without her.
8. Iris West from The Flash
The Flash is definitely among the best superhero TV shows, but Iris West has never been exactly a favorite for many fans. Despite her being the main character’s love interest, the writers made Iris unbearably clingy and annoying. Her tendency to cause drama (and do next to nothing else) grew old really quickly for most of us.
7. Kate Pearson from This Is Us
So far, there have been predominantly “whiny” characters on our list, but that’s only because it’s probably the most annoying trait a human being can have. Kate Pearson from This Is Us only adds to the lot: she’s constantly complaining and blaming others for her problems, all the while she can’t be nice even to her husband.
6. Ted Mosby from How I Met Your Mother
How I Met Your Mother fans are extremely divided on Ted Mosby: some think he’s a sweetheart, but others have actually watched the show. Though the main character, Ted is arrogant, pretentious, and — you guessed it — whiny. No surprise it took him so long to find the woman of his dreams, and he was lucky to have her stick around.
5. Samuel Powers from Saved by the Bell
Taking a little break from all the whining, we have Samuel Powers or, as fans like to call him, the worst part of Saved by the Bell. Somehow more annoying than a tiny aggressive dog, Samuel is known for always messing things up for his friends and being unable to call the smallest secret. Not a likable fellow in the slightest.
4. Negan from The Walking Dead
Alright, we’re stepping into the hot takes territory here. Many TWD fans like Negan, and he’s a cool character, but… They really messed up the part where he’s supposed to be a scary villain, didn’t they? For the most part, Negan is just plain annoying: he can’t keep his mouth shut for ten seconds, and that’s not intimidating.
3. Debbie Gallagher from Shameless
A quick disclaimer before we start taking shots: we’re not talking about the early season Debbie — only the grown-up one. Watching such a sweet and wholesome child grow into such a terrible and resentful person is just painful, but arguably, that’s the one thing Shameless did to all of its characters which is the show’s biggest fault.
2. Skyler White from Breaking Bad
If the word obnoxious had a physical embodiment in our world, that would be Skyler White. Walter’s wife might come off as a sweet person at first, but after the first few scenes with her, it becomes clear that each new one’s going to be a pain. Not having to see Skyler ever again was the only good thing about the Breaking Bad ending.
1. Meredith Grey from Grey’s Anatomy
The ultimate infuriating protagonist, Meredith Grey is just the worst. Once again, she was pretty okay in the early seasons, but as time went by, she became totally insufferable. Whiny, rude, and mean to everyone around her, Meredith’s narcissistic nature only adds another point to the ever-growing pile of reasons why Grey’s Anatomy is but a shadow of its former self.
