Zootopia 2 Update Reveals Sequel Is Coming Sooner Than You Thought
After nearly a decade of anticipation, the movie finally gets a release date, and it comes in a bit over a year.
Summary:
- Zootopia premiered nearly eight years ago and became a massive critical and financial success
- However, the franchise seemed abandoned for several years, as the existence of the sequel was only confirmed a year ago
- Now that Zootopia 2 finally has an official release date, it won't be long before the movie hits theaters
With the constant announcements of new live-action remakes of Disney classics, the company has been heavily criticized for its perceived lack of originality these days, relying on familiar titles to make more money by exploiting nostalgia.
Unfortunately, it seems that the situation is only going to get worse, as during the recent earnings call, Disney CEO Bob Iger stated that the company will be leaning more towards sequels.
This is most likely due to the company's recent string of flops with original titles such as Soul (2020), Strange World (2022) and Wish (2023), which were not based on pre-existing Disney properties and failed to succeed at the box office.
Zootopia 2 Is Closer Than Fans Expected
However, this news isn't all bad, as one of the most anticipated Disney sequels that fans have been craving for almost a decade is finally one step closer to seeing the light of day and is set to be released relatively soon.
Zootopia, an animated action comedy in the best traditions of the buddy cop genre, premiered back in 2016 and immediately became a massive success, earning rave reviews from critics and fans alike and grossing $1.025 billion against a budget of $150 million.
Set in a world populated by anthropomorphic animals, the story revolved around rookie rabbit cop Judy Hopps, voiced by Ginnifer Goodwin, who accidentally teams up with fox con artist Nick Wilde, voiced by Jason Bateman.
Together, they delved into the mystery of why some of the citizens were suddenly reverting to their aggressive, feral state and uncovered a conspiracy aimed at escalating tensions between carnivores and herbivores.
The Franchise Seemed Abandoned For Several Years
Audiences loved the intriguing story, gorgeous visual style, and charming characters, and expressed a desire to see more of this magnificent world, but despite occasional talk of a possible sequel, Zootopia seemed strangely abandoned.
In 2020, a spin-off series, Zootopia+, was announced, and after it was released in 2022 to an equally warm reception, we finally got confirmation in 2023 that a full-fledged sequel was in the works.
Now, during the aforementioned earnings call, it was officially confirmed that the movie is even closer than expected, as Zootopia 2 will premiere on November 26, 2025.
