Young Sheldon’s Most Controversial Ship: Wholesome or Worrisome?
Young Sheldon has really divided fans over this potential couple.
Pastor Rob and Mary Cooper’s relationship has been heavily debated ever since the character’s debut in Young Sheldon season 5. They got off to a rocky start because Rob’s approach to church and religion was far from traditional, which wasn’t to Mary’s liking at first.
As the series progressed, the two characters seemed to patch things up and even develop a friendship (bordering on an emotional affair on Mary’s part, but still). While some fans love Mary and Rob’s interactions, calling them wholesome and sweet, others find them creepy and unsettling. So which is it?
Well, that’s a really difficult question. Mary and George’s marriage is not without problems, but they try to make do with what they have. However, they do not really share the same interests or a deep emotional connection – at least not anymore.
At one point, Mary felt unappreciated and misunderstood by George, and she needed someone to turn to, someone who would just get her. Pastor Rob happened to be that person.
Mary and Rob shared a lot of beautiful moments on-screen – for instance, Rob was the first person Mary told about Mandy’s pregnancy. He was also the person who tried to change Pastor Jeff’s mind when he forced Mary to take a leave of absence. They could’ve had an endearing friendship if it weren’t for their potential feelings for each other.
While it’s great that Mary found a shoulder to cry on and someone to share her thoughts with, it should never have been Pastor Rob. Mary is a married woman, and she should’ve tried to work things out with her husband George before going to Rob (even though they only talked).
Mary can deny her attraction to Rob all she wants, but it is obvious. Viewers noticed that she was pretty upset when she found out that Rob was on a date with another woman, and the pastor was no better. He clearly got too close to Mary and started to develop feelings for her. Remember the episode where Rob told Mary about his job offer and asked for her advice? There was nothing friendly about that.
The verdict is in: Mary and Rob’s relationship is worrisome rather than wholesome. Sorry, folks.
