Young Sheldon S7 Has a Way to Bring Back TBBT's Main Characters, but Fans Not Gonna Like It
The Pasadena gang may appear in the series finale, but only in a very poignant way.
Summary
- On February 15, 2024, the final season of Young Sheldon will premiere on CBS.
- The writers will have to deal with a very devastating canon event.
- And as painful as it may be, it could be a hook for the appearance of Sheldon Cooper's future friends.
The prequel to The Big Bang Theory, Young Sheldon, is strikingly different from its predecessor. While TBBT, despite its numerous poignant moments, was a light-hearted sitcom with a laugh track in the background, the spin-off is a comedy-drama in the truest sense of the word, taking a more serious approach in both cinematography and writing. And that is what makes this coming-of-age series so great: it tackles the issues of adolescence and childhood trauma head-on by placing them in the context of a deeply relatable family.
And now, very soon, Season 7 will hit the small screens, which—unless a miracle happens and the executive producers manage to get another season from CBS—will be the final chapter in the story of the Cooper family, and Sheldon in particular, growing up and becoming the brilliant and eccentric scientist we know. Given that the season will be shortened, the writers will have a lot of heartbreaking storylines to cram into 14 episodes, including some that the TBBT canon says just have to happen.
But the finale could be even more heart-wrenching if the writers manage to bring back the main show's characters, drawing parallels to the second season finale of YS — only the way it might be accomplished could be quite sorrowful.
There's a Major Canon Event That Must Happen
According to the adult Sheldon from TBBT, there are more than a few pivotal moments in his life that will not only change him forever, but also show how true the anecdotes of a man who often misinterprets what happens around him were.
In particular, fans are waiting for the worst to happen: the death of George Cooper Sr. Before that, of course, there's the 'cheating' incident that will cause Shelly to turn his back on his father forever. And yet his sudden death, no matter what the grown-up Sheldon says, is bound to shock him and make him feel a universal loneliness, especially when he finally goes to Caltech.
This Is Where the Crucial Cameos Can Appear
In the final episode of Season 2, titled A Swedish Science Thing And The Equation For Toast, Sheldon felt like a tiny neutrino, a solitary elementary particle, almost invisible to the material world and barely interacting with it. This is how the boy conceptualized his loneliness, thinking he would never find anyone like himself.
But at that point, the plot moved to other parts of the world to show that Sheldon would one day find his own people: we saw an 8-year-old Leonard, a 9-year-old Rajesh, a 9-year-old Howard, a 5-year-old Bernadette, a 4-year-old Penny and an 11-year-old Amy. So Sheldon had his whole life ahead of him, and he didn't have to feel like a worthless neutrino.
After the death of a loved one, Sheldon can feel alienated again, experiencing a full range of emotions from hatred and resentment to grief at loss and overwhelming loneliness. But Young Sheldon remains an optimistic show, so a shot showing the future best friends again could be a positive note on which to end the series.
It would be a great plot loop, which in turn would be a great tie-in between Young Sheldon and The Big Bang Theory. Alas, fans will obviously have to deal with the difficult emotions, empathizing with Sheldon after such a tragic incident and realizing that this is where the story will end. However, if the good old Pasadena gang makes a cameo appearance, the ending will be incredibly realistic and uplifting.
Meanwhile, don't forget that Young Sheldon will be back on CBS and Max in less than two months. The first episode of Season 7 will air on February 15, 2024.
