To be Sheldon, you have to act like Sheldon.

Although the actor is supposed to know how to transform and change to merge into the character they’re portraying, more often than not the production team along with casting directors are looking for someone who already looks the part. That is especially true in the case of the kid actors, who are more difficult to work with.

First of all, you cannot demand the same level of understanding and dedication from a kid actor that you can from an adult. According to laws, as well as just common sense, kids aren’t supposed to put in as much work to not overstimulate their psyche. Besides, it’s much harder to command and direct a child than it is with responsible adults.

Casting the children's version of Sheldon Cooper was crucial for the young Sheldon, and they only had one chance to get it right. Not only did the character have to be central to the show's storyline, but he also had to match the talent and charisma of The Big Bang Theory 's original Sheldon, Jim Parsons.

And not many adult actors could do that, let alone children. But Iain Armitage came into his audition so strong that no one could resist him right away. During his interview with Firstpost in 2019, the young actor admitted that it wasn't the easiest task. The production team asked him to learn a three-page monologue.

Luckily, he managed to do it and got the confirmation before returning home.

“I got a callback, which was great, and Jim Parsons, Steve Molaro, and Chuck Lorre were all there, and I just did my thing. When we were getting on the flight to go back to Virginia, we got a call that I had gotten the part, and I thought, 'Why are we going on this flight then?'” Armitage recalled.

Now that there are 6 seasons of Young Sheldon already out, it’s hard to imagine the kid version of Sheldon Cooper being portrayed by anyone but Iain Armitage.

If you want to see what the future holds for Sheldon, make sure to tune in to Young Sheldon season 7. Keep an eye out to not miss the release date!
