Young Sheldon Just Made Letting George Go an Impossible Task
How are we supposed to cope?
Summary:
- Besides overshadowing the original show in quality, Young Sheldon is known for not keeping up with the canon of The Big Bang Theory.
- George Cooper, Sheldon's father, was one of the most changed characters. However, his death in season 7 was confirmed by the EP.
- Now that the canon has been changed again, and viewers know he didn't cheat on his wife, it's even harder to accept the upcoming tragedy.
From the very beginning of Young Sheldon, George Cooper has been one of the most controversial characters on the show. Not because of his personality or his portrayal by Lance Barber, but because of all the changes that the writers made to the lore that was given about him in The Big Bang Theory.
Of course, when the events of the original show took place, George was already dead, and as we now know, even the producers behind Young Sheldon knew that this was inevitable. But that meant viewers had to rely on Sheldon Cooper's own descriptions, which weren't the most reliable.
From a raging alcoholic, indifferent to his family, and having an affair, George turned out to be a decent father. A little troubled, a little less responsible than a father of three should be, but nothing too extreme for a middle-aged man in 90s Texas. That, however, only means it will be harder to wave goodbye to him.
When Will Young Sheldon’s George Die?
Though the exact point in the season when George will meet his demise is unknown, fans are now certain that it is inevitable. No matter how much creative freedom the prequel has been given, some events are not susceptible to change. Sheldon's father's death definitely affected him and shaped him as a person, so there is no way young Sheldon could ignore it.
However, now that viewers know that Sheldon's discovery of his father "cheating" on Mary was nothing more than a misunderstanding, as it was Mary herself in a funny wig she brought back from Germany, George has been redeemed to the point that viewers will find it hard to watch the finale without him.
Redditor namst9 even pointed out how well this smart decision fits into The Big Bang Theory's narrative without contradicting it.
“The episode where Sheldon explains to Penny why he knocks 3 times was on the other night and he said that he and his dad never spoke of it. Mary, Missy and Georgie never mentioned him cheating in TBBT. <...> So glad the writers caught on to that detail.”
Now that one of the most important moments of George's life has been explained in the show, all that remains is the final chapter of his life.
Although some people believe that we will see or hear about George's death in the show, others prefer that it be left behind the scenes. After all, killing off a fan-favorite character doesn't exactly scream "heartfelt and funny finale."
To see how young Sheldon wraps up the Cooper family's story in the remaining episodes, tune in to the show every Thursday on CBS.
