Mary and George’s marriage has been under a huge risk for much longer than anyone thought.

Having wrapped the whole story up a couple of months ago, The Big Bang Theory ’s prequel Young Sheldon left its fans on a bittersweet note proving that the titular character had reasons to hide his own tragedies behind the omnipresent quirkiness, but things could have got even worse should the creators have opted for another heartbreaking plot twist.

Despite George Sr.’s death in the final season, Young Sheldon still remained a warm family comedy, yet the whole storyline was once significantly jeopardized all due to one side character’s sudden departure.

During Young Sheldon’s run of seven seasons, Mary and George’s marriage went through a major crisis when both of them almost cheated on each other. While Mary barely escaped falling for Pastor Rob’s charms, George witnessed several attempts of the Coopers’ neighbor Brenda Sparks to seduce him.

Brenda’s romantic feelings for George were never explained, though many fans surmised that the character somehow felt free to confess to a married man because her actual husband was nowhere to be found at that moment.

Brenda’s husband Herschel was last seen in Young Sheldon’s season 2, and his sudden disappearance from the series provoked many questions since the character never got a clear sendoff.

However, a big update on Herschel is finally given in the prequel’s final season when Brenda’s son Billy reveals to Sheldon’s sister Missy that Herschel moved to New Jersey and never came back to visit his family in Texas since then.

As it turned out, Herschel’s departure and complete indifference towards his ex-wife and son’s feelings actually caused all the mess that would have easily led to Mary and George getting divorced.

Brenda’s big interest in George is once subtly explained by herself when in season 6 she admits to Mary that she has been feeling lonely ever since Herschel broke up with her.

This surely wasn’t a good reason to ever hit on a married man, yet Brenda wouldn’t have allowed herself such things if Herschel had stayed in a relationship with her right until the show’s finale.
