You May Hate TBBT Bernadette's Voice, But The Story Behind It Will Melt Your Heart
It did not deserve the backlash it received.
Summary:
- The Big Bang Theory was a CBS sitcom that aired for 12 seasons from 2007 to 2019.
- While the story focused on 5 main characters in the beginning, two more characters became series regulars over time: Amy and Bernadette.
- One of the main features of Bernadette's character was her unique high-pitched voice, which was often hated by fans.
- Actress Melissa Rauch admitted that the voice was inspired by her mother.
To say that the original fans of The Big Bang Theory were less than enthusiastic about the addition of a new character to the universe would be an understatement. Neither Melissa Rauch's Bernadette nor Mayim Bialik's Amy were initially greeted with smiles of welcome from the fandom. Instead, viewers quickly found reasons to hate them.
While the hatred for Amy was mostly related to her being a possible love interest for Sheldon, who people didn't see as the romantic type at all, the hatred for Bernadette was harder to excuse. Her high-pitched voice, often seen as annoying, was one of the reasons fans found it easy to find and stick with.
Although the hatred is mostly gone now, and the characters have completely changed over the years of the show's development, there are still some people who cling to Bernadette's voice as the most ridiculous thing about her character. What they don't know is the heartwarming story of its creation.
Bernadette’s Voice Is Inspired By Melissa Rauch’s Mother
The actress behind Bernadette, Melissa Rauch, has reflected on the role the voice played in the character's personality in many interviews. Rauch herself doesn't speak in the same tone as Bernadette, which often confuses fans when they meet her. However, she takes full credit for the origin of Bernadette's voice.
In an interview with Dave Rubin for The Rubin Report, the actress talked about it briefly:
“Bernadette’s voice is very similar to my mother’s. Except, without the Jersey accent. It’s not that high, but it’s in that tone, in that range,” Rauch admitted.
There is nothing that makes viewers' hearts melt more than a deep backstory for some of the acting traits that the creators bring to the screen. Perhaps if people knew how the family bond between the actress and her mother affected the character, they would be a little more willing to accept Bernadette as she is.
Fortunately, both Amy and Bernadette have become such integral parts of The Big Bang Theory that it's hard to imagine the show without them. Despite being annoying at times, they have managed to bring out the best in Sheldon and Howard, and that is the only thing any die-hard fan would want for their favorite character.
If you want to re-watch The Big Bang Theory to see how Amy and Bernadette became central to the plot, the sitcom is available to stream on Max.
