Even though right now there is no shortage of K-drama TV shows and movies coming to the Western world through various streaming platforms including Netflix, some stories will be forever special. That is especially true for all the fans of K-horrors, which managed to get popular even before the Korean entertainment industry peaked in the U.S.

Some people enjoy the unique style of acting in Korean shows, and others find Korean and Japanese horrors in particular to be way creepier than the majority of those produced by Hollywood. Whatever the reason for Train to Busan’s popularity is, the movie has become a phenomenon.

Is Train to Busan on Netflix?

At the time of its release, Train to Busan was considered an indie horror film, already known for being a notch scarier than the big studio films. The film premiered in the Midnight Screenings section of the 2016 Cannes Film Festival, and caught the audience's attention with the simplicity of its premise and brilliant acting.

The movie follows the story of a divorced father who decides to fulfill his daughter's wish to spend her birthday with her mother, who is currently living in Busan. The real journey begins when the train they board succumbs to a zombie infection started by one of the passengers. The father-daughter duo and a small group of other passengers try to escape.

The story is as terrifying as it is heartbreaking. Directed by Yeon Sang-ho, Train to Busan doesn't rely too much on cheap jumpscares and graphics, but finds other ways to keep the tension high. This, along with the brilliant writing, has earned the film its well-deserved 95% Rotten Tomatoes score.

The runaway success that followed helped launch the entire franchise of the same name. So far, it consists of the animated prequel Seoul Station, released in 2016, and a standalone sequel called Peninsula, released in 2020. However, there are two more projects yet to be released: an American-produced spinoff and the untitled Peninsula sequel.
