Yet Another Young Sheldon Character Who Doesn't Match His TBBT Persona
You can't trust anything Sheldon Cooper says.
Although Young Sheldon has found its way into the hearts of many viewers, the show has been heavily criticized by none other than fans of the parent series, The Big Bang Theory. One might think that the original viewers would be the most loyal audience, but the longer the prequel goes on, the more fans feel like they've been lied to.
The question is: Which story is telling the truth?
There are so many differences between how Sheldon described his life and family in The Big Bang Theory and how it is being portrayed in Young Sheldon that we can't figure out what is supposed to be canon. Much to the audience's surprise, George Cooper isn't a raging alcoholic who cheats on his wife, and Sheldon's mother isn't as perfect as she seemed.
And it's not just the Coopers who have changed a lot during Young Sheldon's run. Sheldon's biggest bully, Billy Sparks, turned out not to be a bully at all. Aside from calling Sheldon a "doofus" and holding the chicken in front of his face in one of the earlier episodes, he did nothing to earn that title.
On the contrary, many viewers actually think that Billy is much sweeter than Sheldon himself. He may not be as smart, and he may not have as many accomplishments at this age, but at least he doesn't seem to take out his frustrations on other people.
One way the showrunners can still correct this mistake is by making Billy a bully in future seasons. The problem with that, however, is that this storyline may now feel a bit rushed.
Although viewers have seen the basis for such behavior in the verbal abuse Billy has endured from his mother, and him being upset over Sheldon's wording, these details are still too subtle to turn him into a full-blown bully.
Assuming that the seventh season of Young Sheldon won't be the last, the writers should take the time to really work on this storyline.
The other option is to just explain how and why the grown-up Sheldon believes his childhood to be so different from what actually happened. At this point, people just want some explanation to address the incongruence between the prequel and the parent show.
