Wearing cowboy boots doesn’t make one a hero.

The main characters of popular shows are usually portrayed as protagonists. But sometimes the tables are turned in a strange way, and the main characters of the show become pure evil.

In the case of Yellowstone, while we still can't call John Dutton that kind of monster, he certainly did things ugly enough to be called the show's villain. Here are some of them, ranked by how disgusting they were.

5. John Kicked Kayce Out For Getting Monica Pregnant

The Dutton family members have complicated relationships, but these two had never seen eye to eye. It was especially obvious in the first batch of episodes, and then the end of season 2 revealed the reason. It turned out that when Monica got pregnant with Kayce's son Tate, John didn't want to deal with it and just told his son to force her to have an abortion.

Instead, Kayce married Monica and moved away to live with her and their child. It would be years before John could finally accept Kayce and his family and try to rebuild a relationship with them.

4. John Runs Against His Son For Governor

A great parent should never interfere with their children's work, but stealing it is just the next level of cruelty. John and Jamie also had more than a complicated father-son relationship, but season 4 was just the worst for their dynamic.

Jaime was going to be governor and was invited to a party where he thought he was going to make his announcement speech. Instead, he was shocked to find out that his father had been betraying him all along and was running for governor himself.

3. John Is Against Progress

It's weird to even imagine someone thinking that, let alone saying it out loud, but yet we had a governor in Yellowstone who claimed he was against progress. Well, of course he meant it in a noble way, saying he wanted to protect nature from big corporations, but the real reason was that John owned more land than any man should own for himself, and he didn't want any legal process to change that.

2. John Uses People For Murder

This actually happened more than once, so it's hard to point to one particular scene to prove it. However, fans of the show know that John doesn't like to get his hands dirty, so he uses the cowboys of the ranch, especially Rip, to murder people and hide their bodies.

He was never ashamed to use his power to kill those who bothered him. So these things make him a real criminal in the end.

1. John Refuses The Buyout

We got the feeling that John Dutton was a selfish person from the very beginning of the show, but this scene just proved it. While complaining about having no money to save the ranch, Dutton still said no when "the enemy," Market Equities, offered a very generous buyout for the ranch.

The only problem was that they wanted to build an airport instead of the ranch, so... yeah, Dutton said no to the $500 million deal and decided it's best for the ranch and all the people who work there and his own family to suffer.
