Yellowstone's Creator Sheridan Finally Addressed the McConaughey in the Room
We all know that McConaughey joined a new Yellowstone project, and we’ve known it for quite some time now — but Taylor Sheridan has been keeping quiet about it.
The fact that Matthew McConaughey is taking on the lead role in one of Yellowstone ’s upcoming spin-offs is no one’s secret, and the audience has already had its fair share of discussions about it. Still, there hasn’t been an official confirmation from Taylor Sheridan, so no one knew for sure if it was set in stone.
But now, Sheridan finally addressed the McConaughey in the room and talked about the actor’s involvement, the project they’ll be working on together, and his plans regarding this exact branch of what we’re now used to calling Yellowstone Universe.
The creator of the show confirmed that he was going to work with Matthew McConaughey and that they were mutually interested in creating a new Yellowstone show together; both men think they can create something outstanding together.
“[Matthew] seems like a natural fit. We had a few conversations over the years and spitballed a few ideas. Then he started watching Yellowstone and responded to it. He was like, ‘I want to do that.’ And by ‘that’ he meant diving into a raw world clashing up against the modern world. And then I said, ‘Buddy, that we can do,’” shared Sheridan.
But there’s a twist, too: while the vast majority of rumors and speculations suggested that the McConaughey spin-off will be set at the time of the original Yellowstone series or somewhere close to it, Taylor Sheridan pointed out that he had a different understanding of what a spin-off is, so we misunderstood his intentions.
“My idea of a spinoff is the same as my idea of a prequel — read into that what you will. There are lots of places where a way of life that existed for 150 years is slamming against a new way of life, but the challenges are completely different. There are a lot of places you can tell this story,” explained the Yellowstone creator.
So basically, the much-anticipated McConaughey spin-off is happening, but it’s actually a sequel — and a standalone one, at that.
As Taylor Sheridan is looking to switch locations and times, the new story featuring the acclaimed superstar may land anywhere and not even be connected to the Dutton family at all…
But let’s face it: we’re all going to watch this series regardless of whether it has the Duttons’ name written on it. It has two far more important names all over it anyways — Taylor Sheridan and Matthew McConaughey, so it’s going to be wicked.
