Does that mean we’ll never see another Dolan masterpiece again?

To say that the last few days have been rough for indie film lovers everywhere would be an understatement.

First, the community was shocked to learn that Greta Gerwig was on her way to working with major studios and looking for bigger productions, and now Xavier Dolan seems ready to leave the industry.

Though the director is already facing backlash on social media for being ungrateful and pretentious, Dolan's feelings are completely understandable.

The entertainment industry hasn't gotten back to its pre-pandemic state, and now the cost of projects, both in money and effort, isn't worth the reception of an end result.

The director shared his perspective on the topic in an interview with EL PAÍS:

“I quit the filmmakin and directing. I don't feel like committing two years to a project that barely anyone sees. I put too much passion into it to have these disappointments. It makes me wonder if my filmmaking is bad, and I know it's not,” he said.

The reason for such a decision lies in the non-existent interest in his latest project, The Night Logan Woke Up.

Although it was the first TV show Doan ever worked on and a lot of people were excited about it, it didn't do well as a product. The only countries where the show was distributed are Canada, France, Japan and Spain.

For some, that would be a sign of international success. For Xavier Dolan, who achieved great recognition in his early 20s, it's a step back.

However, if you are a fan of Dolan's work and feel devastated by this decision, there is some good news for you: before completely cutting all ties with filmmaking, the director will be working on one more show.

According to his own words, it will be an HBO series in English, which is currently in the embryonic stage.

Stay tuned for news and updates on Xavier Dolan's last project before his early retirement.
