Xander Harris (played by Nicholas Brendon) was a divisive character throughout all seven seasons of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. And he was pretty forthright in telling Buffy exactly what he thought of Angel (David Boreanaz).

And some fans are convinced that the on-screen tensions between Xander and Angel were reflected off-screen in the relationship between Brendon and Boreanaz.

While this has never quite been confirmed, the 2022 book Into Every Generation a Slayer Is Born, Brendon described the spin-off series Angel as "worse than those Twilight f**kers".

In fact, the Los Angeles-born actor has a very low opinion of Angel as a character – but also as the entire spin-off show. Talking about the show he asked how "the most boring character in TV history" managed to get their own show.

He went on to say "I'm not sure if I'm talking about David or Angel at this point", adding fuel to the rumours about the two actors not seeing eye to eye.

Of course, the comments could be born out of jealousy or resentment on the part of Nicholas Brendon. Since Buffy ended his acting career has not exactly been plain sailing.

He's been involved in a number of unsuccessful projects and faced issues with substance abuse and multiple arrests.

He did land a part in the ABC Family TV movie Relative Chaos that saw him reunite with Buffy co-star Charisma Carpenter – who he was far more complimentary about, saying he missed her after she moved on to the spin-off series.

Boreanaz, by contrast, went on to act in some successful shows – including taking leading roles as Jason Hayes in SEAL Team, and Seeley Booth in Bones (for which he was nominated for a People's Choice Award for Favourite TV Drama Actor and the Teen Choice Award for Choice TV Actor: Drama in 2006, 2011 and 2012).

He also voiced Green Lantern/Hal Gordon in the 2008 animated movie Justice League: The New Frontier.

In August 2022, Brendon suffered what was described as a "cardiac incident" that left him hospitalised. The incident was said to have been linked to a long term condition he suffers from called Cauda equina syndrome.

This is a type of spinal stenosis which causes the nerves in the lower back to become severely compressed, resulting in lower body numbness.

After years of suffering from depression and checking himself into rehab to help his fight against drug and alcohol abuse, it's hoped the actor has a brighter future and can get back into acting.

Whether he ever changes his opinion on Angel or David Boreanaz, though, is very much up for debate.
