When we hear "expensive movies", we typically think of fantasy, sci-fi, and superhero genres.

But horror movies can also consume production money like crazy — here are prime examples of that!

5. Prometheus — $130M

Ridley Scott 's Prometheus was the fifth part of his Alien franchise — and its most expensive installment ever.

Scott had a large ambition of properly creating the setting of the late 21 century and spent millions upon millions on scientists and artists for it — and he filmed the entire movie with 3D cameras which was worth over $10M in itself.

Overall, Prometheus was worth around $130M in production.

4. I Am Legend — $150M

Starring Will Smith, I Am Legend is almost notoriously known for its filming methods. The majority of the movie's scenes required closing off New York's streets for hours and even days, and that required a ton of money.

The Brooklyn Bridge scene alone consumed $5M to shoot — but for I Am Legend, that's like a drop in the sea considering the entire movie turned out to cost over $150M.

3. The Wolfman — $150M

The original 1941 The Wolfman cost only $180K to produce, but its 2010 remake almost doubled its initial budget of $85M during production.

With a tremendous amount of money spent on make-up and VFX, the movie turned out to be a massive failure: it didn't even earn back its budget, earning only $142.6M at the box office.

2. Van Helsing — $170M

Stephen Sommers' action horror Van Helsing was indisputably one of the most popular movies in its genre at the beginning of the century.

At the time, its production cost of almost $170M was considered insane, but the company turned a large profit on it earning over $300M total despite a large number of negative reviews.

1. World War Z — $190-269M

The absolute champion of the rating still holds a mystery of just how much money it gulped.

Potentially, the most expensive horror movie in history cost up to $269M to make, but it managed to earn a lot more: having grossed $540.5M in the box office, World War Z became both the highest-grossing movie in Brad Pitt's career and the highest-grossing horror movie overall.
