Missed thought-out female characters? This show has some.

On July 31, Women in Blue was released, a crime drama about the first female police force in Mexico in the 1970s. It is both a thriller and a drama, in which the crimes of a serial killer pale in comparison to everyday violence.

What is Women in Blue About?

Mexico City, 1971. Four ambitious women – Maria, Valentina, Gabina and Angeles – decide to challenge conservative Mexican society by joining the first women's police unit.

But they soon realize that the creation of their small unit is just a cunning maneuver by the authorities to divert the attention of the press from the crimes of a serial killer. The policewomen, whose professionalism no one believes in, will conduct their own investigation and stop the killer.

Women in Blue is Based on a Real-Life Police Unit

Director and producer Fernando Rovzar was inspired by the real-life biographies of Mexico's first female police officers, who began working in the early 1970s – their archival photos can be seen in the series' opening credits.

In real life, the women's unit of the Mexico City police was created to distract the population from real problems. While the women in blue uniforms searched for lost dogs and gave tourists directions to museums, corruption and violence flourished in the depths of the police force.

Women in Blue is a Quality Story with Developed Female Characters

This is not the first time Rovzar has worked with a story about women who break gender stereotypes without turning into flat girl bosses.

For example, he helped develop the multi-episode drama Monarca for Netflix, which told the story of a woman named Ana Maria's struggle for dominance in her family's tequila empire. With that show, Rovzar proved that he could make quality projects about complex female characters, so expectations for his Women in Blue were quite high.

At first, the show seems a bit slow, but it quickly picks up speed as the four partners begin an unauthorized investigation. The detective story is written in the best tradition of David Fincher's thrillers: it is almost impossible to figure out the killer, so twisted and complex is the madman's arc.

However, the viewer's attention is not held by the series' detective storyline, but by the excellent characters and their inventive approach to uncovering the killer.

Women in Blue is an example of a project made with a lot of love and a hundred percent commitment. We would like to believe that such an ambitious series will get a second season. Fernando Rovzar's show has all the makings of one – it is proved by its perfect score of 100% on Rotten Tomatoes.
