Will Trent S2 Controversial Finale Actually Sets Up a Perfect Season 3
At his own happiness’ expense, Will Trent is all about justice.
Just like for many other trending shows, this May marks the end for Will Trent ’s season 2 with more coming in the show’s way in the third season, and so far it seems like the detective’s figure has never looked better on TV.
Season 2 finale proved that Will Trent’s titular character still sticks to his professional values that he’s always considered much more important than anything else, no matter how hard it may hit him when it comes to his personal feelings.
The second season’s ending finds Will Trent in quite an entangled situation. In the most intense scene he finds out that his hop-on/hop-off love interest Angie Polaski is involved in a fraud after giving false testimony to save troubled teenager Crystal from being accused in the murder of Lenny Broussard, Angie’s former foster parent.
Trent confronts her and then has a lengthy vision of him proposing to Angie before finally getting back to reality and arresting her.
Will Trent Season 2 Finale, Explained
Amidst all the heated discussion concerning the sequence’s meaning, Will Trent’s showrunners Liz Heldens and Daniel Thomsen revealed that the flashforward scene was supposed to give the viewers a glimpse into the life that Will Trent was abandoning for the sake of his professional values.
The character may have indeed considered future life and marriage with Angie, but the truth about her deeds that opened up to him screwed all his plans up making it clear that Will couldn’t go on with a criminal being by his side.
According to Thomsen, the creators “put an emphasis on Will’s ethical guidelines — they’re like his North Star — and this is the most gut-wrenching situation he could find himself in”.
Given everything that happened in the season 2 finale, Will Trent’s upcoming next season will bring in some major changes for the main character, especially for his detective image. Having proved that professional etiquette is above all else, Will Trent will probably be experiencing not the best time of his life after his loved one’s betrayal.
Though now it seems pretty much unlikely, the next installment may still get a closer look at Will’s personal drama and show whether Angie deserved a second chance or not.
Will Trent’s season 3 will arrive at ABC this fall.
