After a long delay due to the Hollywood strike, a new season of ABC's Will Trent finally kicked off on February 20th, 2024. But the strike also shortened the season, meaning that we only have a few episodes left before what promises to be an explosive finale.
What's It About?
Atlanta detective Will Trent grew up in an overburdened foster care system and is determined to serve the victims of violent crime. As a member of the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, Will's unique abilities and staggering intellect are hampered by his dyslexia, personality quirks, and haunted past.
Here's what you can expect from the final few episodes:
Episode 8 - 'Why Is Jack's Arm Bleeding?' (Tuesday, May 7)
The latest episode of Will Trent finally gave us the key to memories that Will has been blocking his entire adult life.
We won't go into spoiler territory here, but suffice it to say we go on quite a rollercoaster of emotions as Will finally remembers what happened to his 12-year-old self. We've been getting flashes of Young Will, but this is the first time we really understand what he went through with his foster family.
Luckily, Uncle Antonio arrives to do some much-needed counseling. He also suggests that he and Will should take a trip to Puerto Rico to deepen Will's connection to his family and perhaps find some peace.
Episode 9 – 'Residente o Visitante' (Tuesday May 14)
The fallout from episode 7 will echo here, as Will and Antonio bond in Puerto Rico. However, they won't get to stay there long. Returning to Atlanta, Will is immediately pulled into a case centered around an old friend of his uncle's. In the meantime, the suspicious death of a sex offender is investigated by Faith and Ormewood.
Episode 10 – 'Do You See The Vision?' (Tuesday May 21)
ABC is keeping details of the season finale under tight wraps, but we do know that the last episode of season 2 sees the team grappling with a series of murders. A similar marker suggesting the cases are linked.
In the meantime, Angie's past actions will come back to haunt her and she is forced to defend herself from Will's judgment as well as potential fallout for her career.
In an interview with the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, actress Erika Christensen (Angie) said, 'This season finale is so huge, it could be a feature film length episode.'
The finale even took longer to film: typically crew can expect to be on set for eight days per episode. This one took eleven days.
Is Will Trent Being Renewed for Season 3?
Will Trent is based on a bestselling series of novels by Karin Slaughter, who has sold more than 40 million books in over 100 countries. You might expect that this would translate into massive ratings, but the ABC series started off slow, with only a couple of million viewers tuning in at the beginning.
However, it didn't take long for the series to catch on, and now viewership has nearly doubled and the momentum keeps building. ABC has confirmed that the show will be renewed for a third season, which will have at least 18 episodes – much more standard for a network drama.
The creative team behind Will Trent got news of their renewal while season 2 was still filming. That means that we can likely expect a cliffhanger heading into the new year.
