When enough is enough? One theory suggests that more soapy melodrama may be in store for Virgin River viewers.

Summary

  • While the Christmas specials provided no shortage of feel-good vibes, they also introduced no shortage of drama.
  • Season 5 ended on a cliffhanger, with Mel's biological father poised to reveal a bombshell secret.
  • One fan theory is that a well-known character may turn out to be his other child.

Let's face it, Virgin River wouldn't be Virgin River without crazy plot twists and even more drama! That's why the two concluding episodes of Season 5 were not without their share of new challenges for Mel (Alexandra Breckenridge). One of them was the long-awaited appearance of the main character's biological father. He turned out to be a fellow Virgin River denizen who was afraid to be around his daughter.

Fatherly feelings overcame him, however, and he decided to get close to Mel — only to end the season on an agonizing cliffhanger, with some crucial secrets yet to be revealed. One fan theory offers a possible answer: crazy on its face, but incredibly fitting to the Virgin River narrative on closer inspection.

The Return of the Prodigal Father

Now the true identity of Mel's father is revealed at last, and it is a brand new character named Everett (John Allen Nelson). The reunion wasn't an easy one, as the father she met was not only afraid to meet Mel, but also hid some terrible truth.

In other words, in Season 6, Mel will no longer be living a quiet life, as she will have to deal with the complexities of Everett's withheld secrets. And this also seems to be the driving force behind the new drama looming over Mel and Jack (Martin Henderson).

'He's hinting at something that will make their relationship more complicated, so we'll say it's negative,' Season 5 and 6 showrunner, co-executive producer and co-screenwriter Patrick Sean Smith shared.

Craziest Fan Theory That Offers a Plausible Answer

As if Mel didn't have enough drama in her life, fans have given the writers another idea to torment Breckenridge's character. According to the theory, Everett's secret may turn out to be that his biological paternity in town isn't limited to just Mel. In fact, another one of his children may turn out to be... Charmaine (Lauren Hammersley). Patience and tranquilizers will get you there, Jack, so brace yourself!

Everett has been a permanent resident of Virgin River for years. However, Mel and Jack weren't able to dig up any detailed records on him, so theoretically Everett could have had more than a few romantic and sexual liaisons while living in the town, including with Charmaine's mother.

Mel and Char became closer when the former helped deliver the latter's twins and had to hide Charmaine's secret that the father of her children was not Jack, but Calvin (David Cubitt). Charmaine was forced to lie about Jack because the FBI had dropped all charges against Calvin, and with him returning to town, Mel promised not to tell Jack the truth. Considering that Season 6 will once again test Mel and Jack's relationship, it makes a lot of sense for them to be related to Charmaine. It would also be a good way to integrate Everett into the story without introducing more new characters and plot twists.

When Will Season 6 Be Released?

Netflix hasn't made any official announcements, but pre-production is well underway and active production could begin as early as spring 2024.

'We're going to start as soon as the Vancouver weather allows. So hopefully in the spring is what I've been hearing. I keep trying to tell them they should just pick up Season 7 so we can just knock Seasons 6 and 7 and call it a day,' Alexandra Breckenridge told Deadline.

So we should expect Season 6 in late 2024 or early 2025. As for Season 7, it hasn't even been announced yet, but there's no doubt that we'll get the news sooner or later.
