Why It's Too Soon to Celebrate The Marvels as MCU's Next Big Success
The test screenings for the movie seem to be positive, but there is a big catch.
The Marvels, an upcoming American superhero movie based on Marvel Comics, has been getting some pretty polarizing reactions lately.
First, the movie has changed its release window from July to November 2023, creating rumors about some glaring issues that the studio is trying to fix.
This was accompanied by the claims of a Hollywood insider, Jeff Sneider, who said that the movie was something of a mess, both in terms of content and behind the scenes, according to The Direct.
And now the results of the test screenings have arrived, and they seem to be positive. As KC Walsh said in a tweet:
"Again I've heard nothing negative around this production, the movie has gotten more positive praise from test than other MCU films this year, sexist YouTubers use Larson as a way to garner favor with sexist and racists..."
He also responded to a tweet about alleged claims that Brie Larson was difficult to work with on the set of The Marvels:
"Not even sure where that came from or why, everything I've heard about The Marvels has been very positive and glowing, including producing."
While fans are excited about the positive screenings, it is too early to celebrate.
For example, the test screenings for Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania were reportedly just as positive, but once the movie was released, it was slammed with negative reviews and ended up being one of the two MCU movies to have a Rotten status on Rotten Tomatoes.
It is hard to pinpoint exactly why this happens, but it is clear that the reactions of test audiences can be a far cry from those after the movie's initial release. So fans can only hope that all this early controversy will not affect the final quality of the movie.
The Marvels will continue the story of Captain Marvel (Brie Larson), who made her big screen debut in the 2013 film of the same name.
She will team up with Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris) and Kamala Khan ( Iman Vellani ), who were introduced to fans in the TV series WandaVision (2021) and Ms. Marvel (2022), respectively.
The Marvels is scheduled for release on November 10, 2023.
