The answer is pretty simple: it's because the time has come.
It was hard not to compare the two versions of Sheldon we got when the Big Bang Theory spinoff aired a few years ago. The Young Sheldon version of him was definitely a handful, but still a far cry from the one we see on the original show.
Even his quirky side was kind of adorable when he was a kid.
But now it seems that these two Sheldons from different lifetimes are getting closer to becoming one character, as young Sheldon is starting to look more like his adult version.
Even now in the series, we can see that Sheldon doesn't feel like the center of attention in almost every episode, but still tries hard to make everything about him, even his missing sister storyline.
Now that Sheldon is in college, a lot of his personal arcs take place at East Texas Tech.
He spends the whole day at school, and then he still doesn't go home, he has to stay in his special dorm, and that makes him even more separated from his family.
But when he finally does get home to them, it doesn't help because the collective narrative is working fine without him.
And then Sheldon just shows up and tries again with his annoying behavior to be the one everyone is supposed to care about.
The explanation is actually quite simple. It's just time for him to become the version of Sheldon we met at the beginning of The Big Bang Theory.
So all CBS has to do is kill off the young Sheldon version of a character in favor of the well-known mad theoretical physicist.
Yes, as we now know, even the young Sheldon was and is difficult to deal with, but the peak of his social awkwardness and total world-beating behavior is right at the beginning of The Big Bang Theory.
So the writers just did what they had to do with his young version to make him at least a little bit as despicable as he would soon be.
The thing is, fans should now prepare themselves for worse. According to the timeline, Sheldon will soon be moving to California.
And there are some other well-known scandalous things about to happen in Young Sheldon. The cheating, the death, you name it… so just try to save some nerves.
