Who Will Ride Vermithor in House of the Dragon?
One of Westeros’ fiercest dragons has little time to rest before finally being brought to the scene.
House of the Dragon keeps teasing an inevitable war between the Blacks and the Greens thus leaving no chance for every single dragon in the show to stay out of all this mess.
In both of its seasons, Game of Thrones ’ prequel has repeatedly shown George R.R. Martin’s fantastic beasts in action proving that there’s no better war tool for both sides than a fire-spitting creature capable of destroying miles of Westeros’ land. But one big question about the dragons remains a crucial point of the entire feud.
For them to be involved in the whole action, dragons need their own riders who are able to claim the beasts and keep them under control, yet so far that’s not the case for one of the most important game players, Vermithor.
By the time House of the Dragon picks the story up, Vermithor is around 100 years old and is considered one of the strongest and oldest dragons in the entire country, following only Vhagar who at this time is 180 years old.
Unlike the latter, Vermithor can’t really boast of a vast experience in battles and wars since he spent most of his lifetime by King Jaehaerys I’s side, and the latter’s reign was often described as a peaceful one with no significant reasons to send Vermithor into a fight.
However, Vermithor had another major achievement instead, hatching from a dragon’s egg that was placed in Prince Jaehaerys Targaryen’s cradle and thus becoming the future King’s loyal pet since his very early age.
Vermithor eventually formed a tight bond with Jaehaerys who rode his dragon for more than 60 years.
In House of the Dragon, Vermithor remains unclaimed by any other potential dragonrider and hasn’t had another master except for Jaehaerys, meaning that he spent around 30 years confined in Dragonstone.
Still, things may change drastically for Vermithor as, according to what Fire & Blood suggests, he eventually gets Hugh Hammer as his dragonrider when Rhaenyra and Jacaerys recruit more Dragonseeds as their warriors in the upcoming war with the Greens.
The series has yet to demonstrate whether it follows the original novel’s course of events or opts for its own path, but it’s still believed that Vermithor will fight alongside Hugh until the latter is eventually killed.
