The long-awaited 'Top Gun' sequel with Tom Cruise garnered accolades from both fans and critics, but some questions remained unanswered.

Even though the creators of 'Top Gun: Maverick' have never actually made it clear who was the main enemy in the movie, fans still engaged in heated debates regarding who Navy pilot Pete "Maverick" Mitchell was actually fighting against.

The movie remained apolitical, with the only thing we get to know about the mysterious enemy is the fact that they enrich uranium, which can largely be attributed to a number of different countries.

Some fans on Reddit have suggested that it could be Iran or North Korea, explaining this would fall in line with several other things about the enemy mentioned in the movie.

Others believe there's no use in trying to guess a single country in the shadowy enemy, as it might as well be a mix.

This could make sense, since it doesn't look like the enemy in 'Top Gun: Maverick' is one particular country, but rather a vague nation that is supposed to embody a combination of things typical for Hollywood's rogue states.

In not directly pointing at the enemy, 'Top Gun: Maverick' follows the 1986 original movie, which also never named the rogue state the characters are fighting against. After all, many fans agreed, the identity of the enemy is not as important as the characters and the storyline.
