Who Is Dónal Finn? Everything to Know About Young Sherlock’s New Moriarty
The show has found its antihero.
While some fans may think they have had their fill of Sherlock Holmes adaptations, the brilliant detective's story is never far from the minds of TV and movie makers. The latest addition to a long franchise will be Amazon Prime Video 's Young Sherlock series, which will follow the adventures of the ingenious investigator in his younger years.
The show will take viewers back in time to the years Sherlock spent at Oxford University. After the campus is rocked by news of a murder, the young detective takes the initiative to investigate, which leads to the discovery of a whole new conspiracy. And now we may know who is leading it.
Young Sherlock’s Moriarty Actor
So far, the cast of Young Sherlock has been announced as Hero Fiennes Tiffin as Sherlock Holmes, Joseph Fiennes and Natasha McElhone as Sherlock's parents, and Colin Firth as Sir Bucephalus Hodge, who will play a major role in an investigation. And now another name has been added to the group, as Dónal Finn has been announced as James Moriarty.
Sherlock's nemesis will be portrayed by the Irish actor, who isn't exactly new to television, but has yet to make his breakthrough. Given the importance of his character to the entire Sherlock Holmes franchise, it's safe to assume that Finn will see a surge in popularity once the show is released.
Previously, you may have seen the actor in shows such as SAS Rogue Heroes, where he portrayed Eoin McGonigal for three episodes, and The Witcher, where he appeared as Nettly. The actor has also appeared in the 2020 TV movie Albion, where he played Gabriel, and 2022's Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore as a baker named Albert.
Dónal Finn's best-known role to date, however, was an 8-episode appearance in Amazon Prime Video's fantasy series The Wheel of Time, where he played one of the main characters, Mat Cauthon, first portrayed by Barney Harris. Young Sherlock will be the actor's second show on Prime Video.
When Will Young Sherlock Premiere?
Based on Andrew Lane's Young Sherlock Holmes book series and directed by Guy Ritchie, the Young Sherlock series is currently in production. However, filming has only just begun in London in June 2024, so the show will probably not air until well into 2025. For now, we can hope for a summer or fall release, but details will come later.
