Who is Charlize Theron's Clea? 'Multiverse of Madness' Post-Credits Scenes Explained
'Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness' finally came out this Friday, and some fans have already been able to see the long-awaited post-credit scenes revealing some pretty important characters for the MCU future.
Warning! Major spoilers ahead!
The latest Marvel film will continue the story of Benedict Cumberbatch 's character after the events of 'Spider-Man: No Way Home', in which he managed to upset the balance between Earth and the Multiverse, resulting in a bunch of new threats for the sorcerer to deal with. The film will also continue the story of the Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen ), radically changing her persona in the process. The film was directed by Sam Raimi, known for his penchant for horror, so fans of the MCU can expect some pretty violent deaths.
It is reported that there will be two post-credits scenes in the film, involving one brand new major character, as well as one who has previously appeared in the film. So, without further ado, here is an explanation of both scenes.
Credits Scene 1. Charlize Theron makes her MCU debut as Clea
In the first scene we see Strange strolling through the streets of Manhattan, only to be surprised by an unknown assailant in a glowing purple suit. The uninvited guest accuses the sorcerer of disturbing the Dark Dimension when he tried to defeat the Scarlet Witch, and asks Strange to help her fix it. Stephen Strange agrees and jumps through the portal with her.
Thanks to the film's credits, we learn that this mysterious character is actually Clea, and that she is played by 'Atomic Blonde' actress Charlize Theron. This is quite a big deal for Marvel, as Theron is rightfully considered one of the most respected and talented actresses working today. And keeping it a secret until the film's release shows that Feige's "no spoilers" policy really works.
Clea was created by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko back in 1964, and she is Strange's well-known love interest. The fact that she is the daughter of the ruler of the Dark Dimension only complicates things, but in the end their marriage only strengthens their mutual love for each other. Interestingly, in modern Marvel Comics, Clea recently became the Sorceress Supreme after the death of her beloved husband last year. So, yep, it looks like Cumberbatch should be watching his back, because Theron is coming for that red cape.
Credits Scene 2. The return of Bruce Campbell's Pizza Poppa
The veteran actor is sure to melt hearts of many fans with his appearance in the film as a sidewalk pizza vendor named Pizza Poppa, who accuses Strange and America Chavez (Xochitl Gomez) of stealing his precious pizza balls. Strange was forced to cast a spell on Campbell's character to get rid of him, causing the poor vendor to repeatedly punch himself in the face. It's a pretty funny gag, but the second post-credit scene takes it much further.
After the credits, we finally see what happened to Pizza Poppa. We see him exhausted and tired, yet still punching himself in the face. A few moments later, he finally stops, looks frantically straight into the camera and exclaims: "It's over!" thus marking the last moments of 'Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness'.
Campbell's appearance was a bittersweet moment for many fans of Sam Raimi films, as the actor-director tandem reunited after the iconic 'Evil Dead' trilogy. So, after Campbell's character is finally free from Strange's spell, the only serious question remains – will Pizza Poppa return to unleash his wrath on Doctor Strange?
