Where do you travel to to trace the Targaryens’ footsteps?

Fans of iconic shows often want to find out where they were filmed. Some want to feel national pride for housing their favorite characters; others are looking for holiday destinations that would bring them closer to the fictional worlds they live in mentally.

Seeing the overwhelming popularity of House of the Dragon, it comes as no surprise that fans of the series want to trace the Targaryens’ footsteps, too. The Game of Thrones prequel features plentiful stunning locations, and some viewers claim to have recognized some of them as Portugal, the most western European country.

Let’s go over the countries and locations where House of the Dragon was filmed.

Portugal: Monsanto and Penha Garcia

Indeed, fans who recognized this country in the TV show were correct. Two major filming locations were chosen in Portugal: the castle of Penha Garcia and the nearby village of Monsanto which opens up as an amazing view from the castle. Thanks to their authentic style and unique cave houses, these places provided great backdrops for several House of the Dragon scenes.

Spain: Cáceres, Trujillo, and La Calahorra

Portugal’s closest neighbor, Spain also had several of its settlements star in the Targaryen-centered spin-off. First and foremost, the historic medieval towns of Cáceres and Trujillo reprised their iconic “roles” as King’s Landing: previously, they were also used in Game of Thrones Season 7. The La Calahorra municipality also got some love, with battle scenes being filmed there.

Wales: Snowdonian National Park, Gwynedd, and Anglesey

Westeros largely owes its spectacular mountains and beautifully rugged coastline to Wales, which has been providing its breathtaking scenery to HBO since Game of Thrones. House of the Dragon has already filmed in the Snowdonian National Park and the counties of Gwynedd and Anglesey. Several landmarks, like the glacial lake Llyn Gwynant and the Beaumaris Castle, also starred in the TV show.

England: London, Cornwall, Derbyshire, and Hampshire

England housed the majority of House of the Dragon’s filming for one simple reason: the Leavesden Studios is located in London. But other than that, quite a few other locations in England were used for various scenes — St Michael’s Mount, Holywell Beach, and Kynance Cove in Cornwall; Cave Dale, Eldon Hill Quarry, and the Market Place in Derbyshire; and Aldershot in Hampshire.
