We're coming up on the 5-year anniversary of the Suits finale. The USA Network's top legal drama ran for 9 years and was then revitalized on Netflix. The show also inspired a spinoff series and two foreign language adaptations. So whatever happened to its leading man?
Who Is Harvey Specter?
Although Gabriel Macht has been acting since the age of 8, you likely hadn't heard of him until he was cast in Suits as Harvey Specter, a slick and laser-focused attorney famous for closing his cases without ever going to trial.
When Harvey gets sent to find prospective new lawyers for his corporate law firm, Mike Ross (Patrick J. Adams) stumbles into the interview room while on the run from the cops. Mike is a genius who makes a living taking the LSATs for other students, but he cannot go to law school himself due to a mistake in his past.
Blown away by Mike's intelligence and encyclopedic knowledge of the law, Harvey hires the young man in spite of his lack of credentials. The show follows the two as they hide Mike's secret and navigate the shark-infested waters of Manhattan corporate law.
Over the years, the hard-edged and ambitious Harvey softened under the influence of Mike's idealism, and his will-they-won't-they romance with his assistant Donna ended in marriage. The series ends with Harvey and Donna moving to Seattle, where they plan to work alongside Mike and his wife Rachel (Meghan Markle, now the Duchess of Sussex) and fight for the little guys.
Now What?
After nine seasons as a leading man, Gabriel Macht has an estimated net worth of $8 million and a name that will let him walk into any number of high-profile auditions. So where is Harvey Specter now?
The answer may surprise you. While most actors would be attempting to keep their career momentum going after the end of a successful show (something that very few actors manage to do), Macht is going the opposite way. He took himself out of the rat race at the end of Suits, declaring that he was taking a break from acting to spend time with his family.
Normally that's the sort of statement that we hear from disgraced politicians who are forced to leave the limelight – so it's pretty nice to hear it coming from a man on top of the world.
A Family Man
Macht married Australian actress (and former model) Jacinda Barrett in 2004. They have two kids; Satine, born in 2007 and Luca born in 2014.
When Suits wrapped up, it was just in time for Macht and his wife to take the kids on a year-long tour around the world.
When asked about his feelings in a post-Suits world, Macht told TV Insider:
'I have a real sense of freedom having now finished [the show]. And I'm happy. I feel I've put some creative good into the world, and now I want to put some creative heart, more focus and energy into [being with] my wife and my family… You know, I think when you're in Harvey's head for so long, you sort of split in some ways. And so I'm looking forward to being in Gabriel's mind.'
After being in the biz since he was a child, it's no wonder Macht needs a break. Still, fans of Suits are keeping their fingers crossed that we'll get to see him on our screens again some time soon.
