What Song Does Eddie Play in 'Stranger Things' Season 4 Finale?
Eddie's guitar solo was perhaps the most anticipated moment in Volume 2. And not without reason.
Warning: the following article contains spoilers for 'Stranger Things 4' Volume 2
Each part of 'Stranger Things' season 4 seems to have a signature song that marked the most emotional and compelling moment. In Volume 1, it was undoubtedly Kate Bush's iconic hit 'Running Up That Hill'. Volume 2, however, offers even more heartbreaking context for its signature track.
Fans saw Eddie rocking his guitar in the Upside Down long before the premiere of Volume 2, with trailers teasing something truly epic and fiery for the scene. After thousands of song options, Eddie's choice was Metallica's 'Master of Puppets' – and it could not have been better.
A 1986 classic, 'Master of Puppets' is the only single from the band's eponymous album. The original track lasts over 8 minutes, but unfortunately Eddie was not able to shred the song for that long.
His explosive performance in the Upside Down was dedicated to Chrissy – a cheerleader with whom Eddie shared a couple of moments full of chemistry in the very beginning of Volume 1. Chrissy fell victim to Vecna's curse, and Eddie's jam culminated in his death, breaking the hearts of many fans who hoped that he would survive until the end. Some were left quite angry after this, albeit expected and predictable but still heartbreaking, death, arguing that Eddie's sacrifice didn't even make much sense plot-wise (Eddie's death didn't change a thing, basically).
"Personally speaking, I don't think Eddie's death was really necessary. Not only could he have totally gotten out of there in time, but plotwise it didn't really add anything. It just kind of felt like a death for death's sake?" – /BetaThetaOmega.
But, as always, there's another point of view, and as far as supporting characters arcs go, Eddie's was wrapped up beautifully.
"I think his death provided a nice contrast between Eddie (always runs, outsider, unpopular) and Jason (leader, captain, crowd-riler-upper) and how Eddie was the truly brave hero who died for the town that didn't love him," – /KorsiTheKiller.
Rest in peace, master of puppets. You didn't run away this time.
'Stranger Things 4' Volume 2 is currently streaming on Netflix.
