Long-running crime series can be overwhelming to a new viewer, but fans can help you start your introduction to the series on a high note.

With 24 seasons and 528 episodes in the series, many would-be viewers may refuse to even start watching Law & Order: SVU, fearing that the sheer amount of content will prevent them from truly immersing themselves in the NYPD story.

Not everyone is capable of devoting that much time to a television series, especially when the cast, storylines and writing teams change from season to season. But SVU certainly deserves to be seen, albeit not in its entirety.

So, which season should newcomers start their journey into NBC's biggest crime drama?

The One Law & Order SVU Plot Twist Fans Really Hated

Thanks to some fans sharing their opinions online, the potential viewer has a pretty clear idea about the best entry point to get acquainted with the series, and it is pretty obvious – the first season.

The first twelve years of SVU are still considered the best, with great actors and talented writers working at the peak of their form, providing fans with incredible stories and strong performances.

Sure, the first seasons of the crime drama are a bit old-fashioned, but great shows don't really age badly, and SVU is definitely no exception. If you want to get a feel of the classic Law & Order, you should watch the first twelve seasons, as they are the most consistent and rewarding in terms of character development and interesting side plots.

But of course, if the show's age is important to you, you shouldn't abandon hope of watching SVU at all, as fans have provided another entry point into the latter installment of the story – season 13.

Since many of the characters left after season 12 and many new ones appeared in season 13, fans are calling the 2011 season SVU 2.0 because the entire series has indeed undergone a reboot of sorts.

The List of Every Law & Order: SVU and Organized Crime Crossover

It should be noted, however, that many argue that the second part of the series suffers from some minor problems, such as drawn-out plots and weak performances, so the first season still seems like a better place to start.
