Is there really a death that can overshadow Stark’s ending?

The Marvel Cinematic Universe has been great entertainment for the last 15 years. But they also know how to hit us right in the feels. The saddest parts are usually when someone we love eventually dies.

What’s the most heartbreaking death that comes to mind? Probably you immediately thought of Tony Stark who sacrificed himself for the sake of the universe in the ending of Avengers: Endgame.

This was a real heartbreaker. Iron Man was the OG who started the MCU and had a big impact ever since. Robert Downey Jr. was literally born for this role and he gave us one of the most epic superhero performances of all time.

No doubt, Tony Stark's exit left us with tears in our eyes, but some fans reckon there's another death that can go toe-to-toe with Stark's in terms of pure heartbreak. The death in question is Yondu’s ending in the Guardians of the Galaxy’s sequel.

Yondu was impeccably portrayed by Michael Rooker, who was mostly known for his role as Merle in The Walking Dead. Same as Merle, Yondu initially gives the impression of a bad guy but manages to find redemption and die as a hero.

Throughout the Guardians of the Galaxy films, Yondu evolves from a somewhat ruthless Ravager leader to a complex and sympathetic character.

Why Yondu’s death may feel more personal than Stark’s ending? Their deaths share one similarity — they both sacrificed themselves. But there is a huge difference. Tony Stark saved billions of lives as he sacrificed himself for the whole universe.

While Stark’s self-sacrifice is indeed more important for the whole world, Yondu’s sacrifice to save Peter was personal. Yondu's selfless act is more akin to a surrogate father sacrificing himself for his adopted son.

Throughout the films, Yondu grapples with guilt and remorse for the cruel actions he committed in the past. By saving Peter and ultimately sacrificing himself for him, Yondu finds redemption and seeks forgiveness for his transgressions.

James Gunn managed to include some serious drama in his superficially funny movies. Those who watched the threequel will definitely agree. And Yondu’s death in the sequel was a really unexpected and heart-wrenching moment.
