We’re Lucky The Big Bang Theory Learned The Lesson The Office & Scrubs Failed
Too much of a good thing can turn bad.
Summary:
- The Big Bang Theory was a CBS sitcom that ended in 2019 due to the departure of Jim Parsons.
- Considering the reason behind the show's end, fans often discuss what else it could offer after the 12th season.
- However, the majority of viewers agree that no matter how much they love the show, they wouldn't want it to continue.
There is one thing that sets The Big Bang Theory apart from the rest of the iconic sitcoms: its finale was perfect. Although ending the show in season 12 was more of a forced decision after Jim Parsons, who portrayed Sheldon Cooper, announced his departure from the cast, in hindsight, the show only benefited from it.
We've all seen what happened to Scrubs or The Office when the shows decided to explore what they could do without their beloved leads. Though The Big Bang Theory relied a little less on Sheldon's presence, the show would immediately lose its soulful feel given the number of regulars who could draw the focus to themselves.
But if there was a way to continue The Big Bang Theory beyond the glorious point the characters reached in the season 12 finale, how would fans do it? The r/thebigbangtheory subreddit has its own take on the question.
Is There a Season 13 of The Big Bang Theory?
While many viewers of the sitcom have been with it since day one and are now clamoring for its revival in the form of a reboot, the question of a possible Season 13 doesn't really elicit a positive response. While people miss the show, it's hard to imagine a reality where it doesn't end in 2019 and still remains entertaining and relevant.
From both a production and storyline standpoint, The Big Bang Theory was already getting a little old by season 12. The characters that had been developing for more than a decade were now reaching more stable points in their lives, and the audience was growing tired of the forced laugh tracks after every joke.
“12 seasons with about 20 episodes was plenty for the series. It was a great point but some things probably shouldn’t have been done [...] They missed some areas, in all honesty, the show was grasping for strings when everyone was getting hitched or engaged,” Redditor StrangerMemes1996 said.
The Big Bang Theory certainly had its own charm, but it would also be very unlikely to survive the COVID-19 pandemic, considering the way it used to be filmed in front of a live audience.
Another season exploring Amy and Sheldon's post-Nobel life and showing Leonard and Penny as parents wouldn't have been any better than "fine," but anything beyond that would probably turn The Big Bang Theory into a fever dream of a show that everyone wants to see canceled. Getting it over with sooner rather than later was a good decision.
If you still feel weirdly nostalgic for the show, you can always rewatch it from the beginning. The Big Bang Theory is available for streaming on Max.
