Casecation is the 12th episode of the sixth season of Brooklyn Nine-Nine, which is the beloved American police sitcom. Even though it aired almost 5 years ago, on April 11, 2019, to be precise, it’s still one of the most hated episodes of the whole show.
This episode can be easily found in “Top 10 Worst Episodes of Brooklyn Nine-Nine” or at the top of any Reddit discussion of the worst episodes. All of that is due to the behavior of Amy Santiago, one of the main characters.
A short recap for those who don’t remember what’s the deal: in that episode, Amy gives Jake an ultimatum: either they have children or she breaks up with him. Fans were not happy with that plot twist, to say the least.
A lot of complaints say that what Amy did was ‘out of character’… but was it actually?
Throughout the show, Amy did way worse things. Like when she tased Jake to try to win the Halloween heist in Season 6, Episode 16. Or when in Season 7, Episode 11, Amy reveals that she hires an actor, who will hold fake therapy sessions with Jake so she can listen unhindered.
And let’s not forget that at the finale of the 8th season, she literally convinces Jack that he has been in a coma for 7 years, and during that time she got married to Teddy.
After all of that, forcing her boyfriend to have children doesn’t seem so extraordinary, doesn’t it? These situations may pass unnoticed since Brooklyn Nine-Nine is a comedy after all, but if you look closely, Amy low-key was always a terrible person.
However, the problem with Amy being ‘out of character’ may not be in the way she behaved, but in the timing of when she did that.
“Most of the discussion in Casecation would make perfect sense before they got married, not after,” Redditor generallydislikable says.
Also, Amy isn’t the only one breaking the character here. Since the beginning of the show, it has been heavily implied that Jake wanted to be a dad, and then, out of the blue, he changed his mind.
And besides all that drama, Casecation has a really good debate scene and a few gags, which are some of the funniest scenes in Season 6.
